Tough Start to Big Series As Otters Drop Two In S.F.

CSUMB falls in extras, 4–3, drops nightcap 7–1

SAN FRANCISCO — Cal State Monterey Bay found tough sledding as it opened a critical 4–game series at San Francisco State by dropping a doubleheader, 4–3 and 7–1, Friday afternoon at the SFSU Softball Field.

A fatal error in the bottom of the eighth inning allowed an unearned run to score, sinking the Otters in the opener. Reigning CCAA Pitcher of the Week Celeste Villagrana couldn't find that form in the nightcap as she allowed a season–high six earned runs.

After SFSU scored three runs in the third inning of Game 1, the Otters chipped away over the next three innings. They pulled to within 3–2 on a Jessilyn Barrow RBI single in the fourth then tied it when Marissa Hukkanen and Nikki Jones executed a double steal, with Jones scoring in the sixth.

The comeback went for naught, however, when a leadoff walk and an Otter throwing error in the bottom of the eighth inning set the stage for a walk–off ground ball off the bat of Gator second baseman Lehua DeLeon.

A Jones RBI single in the second inning was the lone offensive highlight for the Otters in Game 2. SFSU led 5–1 after two inning and the Otters couldn't push another run across despite collecting nine hits.

Sophomore Ellie Bauer came on in relief of Villagrana and tossed 2 2/3 innings of 1–hit relief to close the game.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… the Otters couldn't get the out at home on a grounder following a leadoff walk and error in the bottom of the eighth inning.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Michelle Castro's RBI double made it 7–1 Gators in the fourth inning.

WORKING OVERTIME… CSUMB lost its fifth extra–inning game of 2019 with the 4–3, 8–inning decision in Game 1. The five losses break the Otters season record of four set back in 2013. CSUMB is 0–5 in extra inning games in 2019.

POWER OUTAGE… It's been a tough year for the Otters on the home run front. Following Friday's action, the Otters have now gone 13 consecutive games without a long, ball, the second longest such streak in CSUMB history. Oddly enough, the longest streak (17 games) came during CSUMB's first NCAA Tournament run from Mar. 8–29, 2008.

A MINI STREAK… Alyssa Burt hit safely in both games Friday to run her current hitting streak to six games. It's the longest active streak for CSUMB.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… Courtney Hennings (3x6, 2B, RBI); Marissa Hukkanen (3x5, SB); Nikki Jones (1x4, 2 R, RBI, 2 SB); Antonia Martinez (2x3).

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters and Gators will conclude their 4–game series with a doubleheader starting Saturday at noon.

GO OTTERS!
