Otters Go Extras Twice To Earn Key Split At S.F. State

Shaye Felix homers, Courtney Hennings collects five hits versus Gators

SAN FRANCISCO — Cal State Monterey Bay worked extra innings twice to earn a key doubleheader split at San Francisco State Saturday afternoon at the SFSU Softball Field. After SFSU took Game 1 4–3 in 12 innings, the Otters battled back to earn a 7–5, 9–inning victory in Game 2.

Junior Shaye Felix (Piedmont Hills HS) hit her first Otter home run in the nightcap before tying the game with a with a clutch RBI single in the sixth inning. The Otters took advantage of three Gator errors to score the winning runs without a hit in the decisive ninth.

Senior Celeste Villagrana (Anaheim/Howard College) overcame a slow start to finish Game 2 with 5 2/3 innings of 3–hit, shutout pitching to earn her ninth win of 2019.

Junior Hayley Fein (Sparks, Nev./Spanish Springs HS) took a hard–luck loss in Saturday's opener. She tossed 6 2/3 innings of 3–hit shutout ball from the fifth inning on only to lose the game on a throwing error in the bottom of the 12th.

In addition to Felix, senior Courtney Hennings (Amador Valley HS) finished the doubleheader 5–for–10 with a double and four RBI. Senior Lusi Stanley (San Bruno/Howard College) hit her first collegiate triple in Game 1 and added a double in Game 2.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… an Otter throwing error on an SFSU sacrifice attempt allowed Hayley Nunes to score from second base in the 12th inning.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… After a leadoff walk in the bottom of the ninth gave the Gators life, Celeste Villagrana coaxed Sydney Jenkins to ground into a double play.

SHE'S GOT THE POWER… Shaye Felix hit her first home run as an Otter in Saturday's second game, ending the second–longest team home run drought in Otter history at 14 games.

UNO, DOS, TRES, QUATRO… Courtney Hennings went 4–for–6 in Saturday's nightcap for the first 4–hit game of her career. It was the first 4–hit game by an Otter since Joanna Perruccio went 4–for–5 against San Francisco State on Mar. 4, 2018.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… Shaye Felix (2x3, HR [1], 3 RBI, BB); Courtney Hennings (5x10, 2B, SB, R, 4 RBI); Lusi Stanley (3x5, 2B, 3B, R, BB).

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters return to the friendly confines of the Otter Sports Complex to host Sonoma State Friday and Saturday (Apr. 19–20) for a 4–game series. First pitch Friday will be a 4 p.m.
