Walk–Off Rally Leads Otters To Big Sweep Of Sonoma

Kassidy Pilpil delivers Game 1 winner, Celeste Villagrana tosses 6–hitter in nightcap

SEASIDE, Calif. — A huge seventh inning rally in Game 1 and complete game shutout from senior Celeste Villagrana (Anaheim/Howard College) in Game 2 led Cal State Monterey Bay to a critical 4–3, 5–0 sweep of Sonoma State Friday night at the Otter Sports Complex.

CSUMB rallied for three runs with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to win the opener on Kassidy Pilpil's (Oxnard HS) pinch–hit, walk–off single. The Otters scratched out three early runs then got a mammoth 2–run blast from Hayley Fein Sparks, Nev./Spanish Springs HS) to support Villagrana's gem in the nightcap.

Game 1 was all Sonoma early as solo shots from Cameron Kirtlan and Nicole Renner staked the Seawolves to a 2–0 lead. Sonoma starter Brielle Vidmar was unhittable through four innings. But CSUMB broke through in the fifth when Gabrielle Forbes (San Jose/Presentation HS) tripled into the right field corner and scored on a throwing error to break the ice.

Vidmar carried a 1–hitter and a 3–1 lead into the seventh when things got interesting. One–out doubles by Fein and Marissa Hukkanen (Calaveras HS) got one run back. A 2–out, bases–loaded single by Courtney Hennings (Amador Valley HS) tied the game. That's when Pilpil came in to hit for Lusi Stanley and poked a 1–2 pitch over third base to drive home Hukkanen with the winning run.

The nightcap was all about Villagrana, who scattered six hits and fanned seven for her team–leading third shutout of 2019.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Kassidy Pilpil carved a 1–2 pitch over the head of Seawolf third baseman Courtney Jack to plate Marissa Hukkanen with the walk–off run.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Hayley Fein launched her team–leading fourth home run of the season over the scoreboard in left field to give the Otters a 5–0 lead in the third inning.

THE PLAYOFF CHASE… Friday's sweep of Sonoma State lifts the Otters into fourth place in the CCAA race with six games remaining. Third through seventh place remain a dogfight as the final seven days of the regular season await. The top six teams in the final regular season standings will advance to the CCAA Championship Tournament.

OTTER CATCH A LATE BREAK… After facing much heartbreak in close games this season, things appearing to be turning around for the Otters of late. After starting the season 4–11 in one run games or extra innings, CSUMB has now won its last two such games.

OTTERS POP… The Otters displayed more than a little pop in Friday's sweep of Sonoma State. Four of their 10 hits Friday went for extra bases (two doubles, a triple and a home run).

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… Hayley Fein (W [14–10], 7.0 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 2 K, BB; 3x6, 2B, HR [4]), 2 R, 3 RBI); Celeste Villagrana (W [10–8], ShO [3], 6 H, 7 K, 4 BB, 1x3, R); Marissa Hukkanen (3x5, 2B, R, RBI, 2 BB); Gabrielle Forbes (1x5, 3B, R, 2 SAC).

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters and Seawolves will conclude their 4–game series with a doubleheader Saturday at the Otter Sports Complex. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
