Otters Split Pitcher’s Duels To Open Series With No. 13 Chico

Celeste Villagrana fans a career–high 11 in 4–0 shutout victory

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay got a pair of dazzling pitching performances Saturday to split a doubleheader with No. 13 Chico State at The Otter Sports Complex. Chico took the opener 2–0 before senior Celeste Villagrana (Anaheim/Howard College) tossed a 6–hit shutout to win the nightcap, 4–0.

Villagrana polished the most sparkling gem of her Otter career, striking a out a career–high 11 for her seventh win of the season. It was her second career shutout in her 13th complete game.

The Otters got Villagrana the only run she would need in the first inning when Marissa Hukkanen (Calavares HS) used a nifty slide to get under the tag at the plate on a Jessilyn Barrow (Folsom HS) grounder to second. Barrow added a 2–run single in the second inning and a Courtney Hennings (Amador Valley HS) infield single plated Rosalia Keirns (Claremont HS) in the sixth to close the scoreline.

Junior Hayley Fein (Sparks, Nev./Spanish Springs HS) was the hard–luck loser in Saturday's opener. Fein matched Chico starter Brooke Larsen pitch–for–pitch through five innings until the Wildcats broke through in the sixth with three singles and a pair of hit batters.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Jessilyn Barrow lined out to short with runners on first and third to end the fifth. It proved to be CSUMB's final chance to score.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… After Chico intentionally walked Courtney Hennings to load the bases with two outs in the second inning, Jessilyn Barrow made the Wildcats pay with a 2–run single that gave Celeste Villagrana more than enough support for the win.

GIANT KILLERS… While the Otters have been the giant far more often than not throughout their illustrious history, they played the role of giant killer with Saturday's 4–0 win over No. 13 Chico State. It was CSUMB's first win over a ranked opponent since beating No. 9 Humboldt State 3–2 on Apr. 29, 2017.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME… Celeste Villagrana celebrated her 22nd birthday Saturday afternoon by giving herself quite a present. She joined Jessica Boyle and Lindsey Clarkson as the only pitchers in Otter history to strike out 11 or more batters in a game. In case you're wondering, Boyle set the Otter record of 20 Ks in an extra–inning win over Notre Dame de Namur on Feb. 1, 2009.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… Celeste Villagrana (W [7–7], CG ShO, 6 H, 11 K, 2 BB); Jessilyn Barrow (2x7, 3 RBI); Rosalia Keirns (1x2, 2B, R); Marissa Hukkanen 2x4, 2B, 2 R); Hayley Fein (1x2, 2B).

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their 4–game series versus Chico State with a doubleheader against the Wildcats Sunday at 11 a.m.
