Otters Drop Two Close Games To Close Regular Season

Otters fall twice at Humboldt; head to CCAA Tournament as No. 5 seed

ARCATA, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay softball put a lid on the regular season portion of its 2019 schedule by dropping a pair of close games at Humboldt State, 3–2 (8 inn.) and 10–7 Saturday at the HSU Softball Field.

CSUMB rallied back from an 0–2 deficit to tie the opener with single runs in the fourth and sixth, including Lusi Stanley's (San Bruno/Howard College) third home run of the season. Humboldt eventually took the victory on a bad–hop single in extra innings.

The Otters appeared to take control of the nightcap when an RBI single by Savanna Salyer Kovacs (Camarillo HS) capped a 4–run fifth inning that put them on top 7–0. But Humboldt exploded for eight runs in its half of the fifth, a rally for which the Otters had no response.

Korina Krueg (Tokay HS/Cosumnes River College), Alyssa Burt (Garden Grove/Pacifica HS) and Stanley each hit safely in both games Saturday. Krueg led that trio with four hits.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Micaela Harris was credited with a single that went through shortstop Korina Krueg, allowing Hanna Holland to score the walk–off run from second base.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… a 2–run single by Mariah Kalamaras finished an 8–run Humboldt fifth inning, overcoming what had been a 7–0 Otter lead.

EIGHT IS ENOUGH… The eight runs allowed by the Otters in the fifth inning of Game 2 are the most they've allowed in an inning this season and the most since Cal Baptist scored nine runs in an inning of a 13–5 win at the NCAA Regional Tournament in 2014.

EIGHT IS ENOUGH, POSTSEASON EDITION… The Otters will be heading to the CCAA Tournament for the eighth time in the past 12 seasons. CSUMB softball has advanced to the CCAA Tournament in eight of the 13 seasons it has been NCAA Division II eligible.

ONE IS THE LONELIEST NUMBER… One–run games have not been kind to the Otters in 2019. After dropping Saturday's opener, 3–2, the Otters fell to 6–12 in 1–run games this season. They are 12–24 in such games dating back to the 2017 season.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… Lusi Stanley (3x7, 2B, HR [3], R, 2 RBI); Korina Krueg (4x8, 2B, R); Alyssa Burt (3x8, 2B, 2 RBI).

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will host the CCAA Championship Tournament May 2–5 at the Otter Sports Complex. CSUMB will be the No. 5 seed will open play against No. 4 seed Sonoma Thursday (May 2) at 2:30 p.m. The tournament features the top six teams in league play this season and runs in a double–elimination format.
