Two Late Rallies Bring Otters To Brink Of Playoffs

Otters score five seventh–inning runs to sweep Humboldt 5–4, 7–4 for key CCAA sweep

ARCATA, Calif. — With its postseason fate hanging in the balance, the Cal State Monterey Bay softball team came up clutch twice to pull out a 5–4, 7–4 sweep at Humboldt State Friday at the HSU Softball Field.

CSUMB improved to 27–21 overall and 23–15 in CCAA play with the wins. One Otter win or one Cal State Dominguez Hills loss Saturday will earn CSUMB a spot in next week's CCAA Championship Tournament.

The Otters rallied from a pair of 2–run deficits to win the opener on Gabrielle Forbes' (San Jose/Presentation HS) seventh inning, 2–out, RBI double into the right field corner. After conceding the lead in the sixth inning of the nightcap, an RBI single by Lusi Stanley (San Bruno/Howard College) and 2–run double by freshman Brittney Perez (Stockton/St. Mary's HS) highlighted a 4–run seventh that sealed the sweep.

Hayley Fein (Sparks, Nev./Spanish Springs HS) struck out six and allowed just two earned runs to earn her 15th victory of the season in Game 1. Senior Rosalia Keirns (Fontana/Claremont HS) fanned three in 1 2/3 innings of perfect relief to earn her first win of 2019 in Game 2.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Hayley Fein coaxed a ground out from JoAna Mullins with the potential tying run at first base to end the game.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Freshman Kassidy Pilpil singled up the middle to plate Brittney Perez and cap a 4–run rally in the seventh inning.

OTTERS ARE WINNERS AGAIN… By winning twice Friday, CSUMB improved to 27–21 overall, guaranteeing the ninth winning season in the 14–year history of the Otter Softball program. For good measure, the Otters have won 25 or more games in 11 of their 14 campaigns.

EVERYBODY HITS… Otter bats rapped 25 hits in Friday's doubleheader, their most in a doubleheader this season. It marked the fourth time this season that CSUMB has posted 20 or more hits in a twinbill.

HENNINGS KEEPS ROLLING… Courtney Hennings had hits in both games of Friday's doubleheader to run her streak of reaching base safely to 13 games. That matches the third–longest streak by an Otter this season. Alyssa Burt opened the season by reaching in 23 straight. Hennings also had a streak of 19 games from Feb. 17 – Mar. 23.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… Hayley Fein (W [15–10], 8.1 IP, 10 H, 4 ER, 8 K, 4 BB, 2x5, BB, RBI); Rosalia Keirns (W [1–0], 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 3 K, 0 BB); Korina Krueg (5x9, 2B, 2 R, RBI); Alyssa Burt (3x6, 2B, 2 RBI); Gabrielle Forbes (4x7, 2B, 2 R, 2 RBI) Alyssa Burt (3x6, 2B, 2 RBI); Lusi Stanley (4x7, 2B, R, RBI).

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their regular season schedule with a doubleheader Saturday at Humboldt State. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
