Otters See The Lights, Explode For 26 Runs To Sweep Twinbill

CSUMB takes marathon 8–hour doubleheader from East Bay 15–1, 11–5

SEASIDE, Calif. — With several long rain delays forcing Saturday afternoon's Cal State Monterey Bay softball doubleheader well into the evening, CSUMB got its first taste of playing under the brand new lights at the Otter Sports Complex. The Otters found the lights to their liking, exploding for 26 runs to sweep Cal State East Bay 15–1 and 11–5.

Junior Hayley Fein (Sparks, Nev./Spanish Springs HS) earned both wins for CSUMB, the first as a starter and the second in relief, but it took exactly eight hours to earn them. The games were scheduled for a noon start, but with several long rain delays, Fein didn't strike out the final batter of the day until 8 p.m.

Otter bats were on fire in the opener, pounding seven extra–base hits to earn the 15–1 win in five innings by run–rule. Fein doubled and homered to lead the 14–hit attack. Sophomore catcher Savannah Salyer Kovacs (Camarillo HS) added three hits—including a pair of doubles—while diving in six runs.

CSUMB jumped to a 3–0 lead in the nightcap before East Bay rallied to take a 5–4 lead in the sixth. Some sloppy fielding in the home half of the sixth allowed the Otters to ease back ahead, 6–5. Gabrielle Forbes (San Jose/Presentation HS) then delivered the clutch hit they needed by clearing the bases with a 2-out double to extend the lead to 9–5.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Savanna Salyer Kovacs laced a bases–loaded double to right center to extend the Otter lead to 6–0 in the first inning. Hayley Fein was in the process of tossing a 2–hitter, making the 6–run lead insurmountable.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Gabrielle Forbes hit a bases–loaded liner past a diving Emilie Portesi in left center to clear the bases and break open a 6–5 game.

A QUADRUPLE TRIPLE…  A first–inning triple by Courtney Hennings extended CSUMB's streak of games with a triple to four. Although the streak ended in Saturday's nightcap, it matched the longest streak in school history, first set from Mar. 31–Apr. 1, 2017.

DOUBLE DOUBLE DIGITS… The Otters scored double–digit runs in consecutive games for the first time since beating Holy Names University 17–0 and 13–3 on Mar. 9, 2017. In case you're wondering, the Otters haven't scored double–digit runs in three consecutive games since doing it four times in a row Feb. 13–14, 2015.

BURT KEEPS ON KEEPING ON…  Alyssa Burt reached base three times in Saturday's doubleheader to extend her streak of reaching base safely to all 21 games this season. Including her last two appearance of 2018, she has reached safely in 23 consecutive games.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… Hayley Fein (2 W [7–5), 7.2 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 4 K, 3x4, 2B, HR [2], 2 R, 5 RBI]; Savannah Salyer Kovacs (3x6, 2 2B, 4 R, 6 RBI); Marissa Hukkanen (4x7, SB, 2 R, 2 RBI); Courtney Hennings (3x7, 2 2B, 3 R, 2 RBI).

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters head to the Inland Empire for a 4–game series at 19th ranked Cal State San Bernardino Mar. 15–16.
