Rain Wreaks Havoc With Shorthanded Otter Staff 10–5 Loss

Hour–long rain dealy forces Otters to use six pitchers in loss to Stanislaus

SEASIDE, Calif. — A long rain delay took its tool on the shorthanded Cal State Monterey Bay pitching staff as visiting Stanislaus State rallied for a 10–5 victory Saturday afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex.

Saturday was scheduled to be a doubleheader, but rain washed out the second game. It now will be played as part of a doubleheader Sunday afternoon.

The Otters jumped out to a 2–0 lead in the first inning and were tied with Stanislaus 4–4 after five. That's when a steady, light rain that began shortly after first pitch became heavier, causing an hour–long delay. Forced to change pitchers earlier than they would have liked, the Warriors touched the Otter bullpen for six runs over the next two innings to pull away.

RBI doubles by Kyle Czaplak (Pacific Grove HS) and Kyle Guerra (San Leandro HS) highlighted the 8–hit Otter attack. Jacob Ahid (Hilmar HS) and Michael Scolaro (Simi Valley/L.A. Pierce College) combined for three innings of shutout relief to lead the Otters on the hill.

THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Jack Large's RBI single capped a 5–run Stanislaus sixth inning that put the Warriors on top 9–4.

DEAN'S STREAK REACHES 10… Kyle Dean went 1–for–3 Saturday to extend his streak of reaching base safely to 10 games.

ALL HANDS ON DECK… With their starting staff shorthanded for the week, the Otters have relied on a bevy of relieves over the first two games of their series with Stanislaus. Nine different pitchers have thrown at least one complete inning for the Otters over the first two games.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… Kyle Czaplak (1x5, 2B, RBI); Brian Morley (1x3, 2B, R, RBI); Kyle Guerra (1x1, 2B, RBI); Kyle Dean (1x3, R, 2 RBI, 2 BB); Jacob Ahid (2.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 2 K).

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their 4–game series against Stanislaus State with a doubleheader Sunday starting at 1 p.m.
