Otters Settle For Split With East Bay

Otters take opener 2–1, fall in nightcap, 8–4

SEASIDE, Calif. — After squeaking out a 2–1 win in the opener, Cal State Monterey Bay let a 4–0 lead slip away in the nightcap, falling 8–4 and settling for a split with Cal State East Bay Friday at the Otter Sports Complex.

Junior Hayley Fein (Sparks, Nev./Spanish Springs HS) allowed six hits and one run to earn the complete game victory in the opener. Ellie Bauer (San Rafael HS) allowed just one run in 2 1/3 innings of relief but took the loss in Game 2.

The Otter offense put 17 runners on base in Game 1 but struggled to find the key hit until Lusi Stanley (San Jose/Howard College) drove a 2–out single up the middle to break a 1–1 tie by bringing Courtney Hennings (Amador Valley HS) in from second in the sixth inning.

In the nightcap, Korina Krueg (Lodi/Cosumnes River College) hit an RBI triple and run–scoring knocks from Hennings and Alyssa Burt (Garden Grove/Pacifica HS) made it 4–0 Otters after two. But East Bay chipped away with deuces in the third and fourth innings before breaking the game open with a four spot in the seventh.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Marissa Hukkanen made a diving catch to rob East Bay third baseman Jocelyn Baldon of a game–tying single with two outs in the seventh.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Maddie Ramirez doubled to dead center field with one out in the seventh to break a 4–4 tie.

TRIPLE THREATS… Courtney Hennings tripled in Game 1 and Korina Krueg tripled in Game 2 Friday for CSUMB, making it three consecutive games in which the Otters have tripled. It's the first time they've tripled in three consecutive games since they did it in four straight from Mar. 31–Apr. 1, 2017.

BURT KEEPS ON KEEPING ON…  Alyssa Burt went 3–for–6 in Friday's doubleheader to extend her streak of reaching base safely to 19 games. That is every game this season. Including her last two appearance of 2018, she has reached safely in 21 consecutive games.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… Hayley Fein (W [5–5] CG, 1 R, 6 H, 4 K); Korina Krueg (3x6, 3B, SB, 2 R, RBI); Alyssa Burt (3x6, 2 RBI); Courtney Hennings (2x7, 3B, 3 R, RBI); Marissa Hukkanen (3x7, SB, R).

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their 4–game set versus East Bay with a doubleheader against the Pioneers starting Saturday at noon.
