Epic Pitching Duel Goes Against Otters To Close Tournament

Hayley Fein’s 4–hitter not enough at Hawaii Pacific wins 1–0

TURLOCK, Calif. — Junior Hayley Fein (Sparks, Nev./Spanish Springs HS) was nothing short of brilliant Sunday afternoon, but it wasn't quite enough to lift Cal State Monterey Bay, which fell 1–0 to Hawaii Pacific University in the final game of the Tournament of Champions at Pedretti Park.

Fein allowed hits to the first two batters she faced, then threw a 2–hit shutout over the balance of the game. But those first two hits—a triple by Tiana Cantero–Kawelo and a single by Sierra Dias—plated the game's only run.

Unfortunately for Otter fans, HPU starter Jordan Curry was just a bit better. Curry threw a 2–hitter of her own and didn't allow a runner to reach scoring position until the seventh inning.

Fein, as it turned out, provided the CSUMB offense its final glimmer of hope after her 1–out single in the seventh led to pinch runner Nikki Jones (Cordova HS) reaching second base, where she ended the game.

Sophomore Gabrielle Forbes (San Jose/Presentation HS) broke up Curry's no–hit bid with a line drive single to left in the fifth inning. Walks to Fein and Aubrey Cousins (San Diego/Del Lago Academy) accounted for all of CSUMB's base runners on Sunday.

THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Pinch hitter Celeste Villagrana grounded out to short to end the game with Nikki Jones on second as the potential tying run.

A PITCHER'S CHANCE… Otter pitching was solid at the Tournament of Champions. Although the team went 1–4, Hayley Fein and Celeste Villagrana combined to fashion a 1.81 ERA and throw five complete games.

POWER OUTAGE… While the pitching held up its end, the Otter bats went silent over the weekend. CSUMB hit just .216 in five tournament games. Only five of the team's 27 hits went for extra bases—all doubles.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… Hayley Fein (L [12–7], CG, 1 R, 4 H, 1x2, BB); Gabrielle Forbes (1x2).

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters return home with a chance to strengthen their positions in the West Region and CCAA races by hosting nationally–ranked Chico State in a 4–game series Apr. 5–6 at the Otter Sports Complex.
