This Time, Pitching And Finesse Take Center Stage In Sweep

Otters manufacture their runs this time in 4–2, 3–2 wins over San Marcos

SEASIDE, Calif. — After using the long ball and a pair of strong pitching performances to win two games Saturday, Cal State Monterey Bay used some finesse to support two more solid efforts in the circle in a 4–2, 3–2 sweep of Cal State San Marcos at the Otter Sports Complex.

Junior Hayley Fein (Sparks, Nev./Spanish Springs HS) scattered four hits to earn her eighth consecutive victory in Game 1. Senior Celeste Villagrana (Garden Grove HS/Howard College) yielded just a pair of unearned runs in the second inning to throw her second consecutive complete game victory.

A seeing–eye double by Courtney Hennings (Amador Valley HS), an infield single by Marissa Hukkanen (Calaveras HS) and a pair of sacrifice flies accounted for all of the Otter scoring in the first game. Junior catcher Michaela Decker (Christopher HS/Cabrillo College) made her first collegiate hit a big one, lining a 1–out double to the gap in right center to plate another Christopher High grad—pinch runner Antonia Martinez—with what proved to be the winning run in the nightcap.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Marissa Hukkanen beat out a single to short to plate Brittney Perez. Hayley Fein was in control for the second consecutive day, throwing five innings of no–hit ball at one point.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Celeste Villagrana got Ellie Smith and Marissa Alvarez to ground to third base to end the sixth after San Marcos advanced the potential tying run to second base.

A HIGH FIVE… Sunday's sweep of San Marcos raised the Otter win streak to a season–high five games.

FIGURE EIGHT… Hayley Fein's victory in Game 1 was her eighth consecutive victory. It is the second longest streak of her career and the longest since she won 12 straight from Mar. 4–Apr. 2, 2017.

SWEET SIXTEEN… By hitting safely in both games Sunday, Courtney Hennings ran her current hitting streak to 16 games. It's the longest streak by an Otter this season.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… Hayley Fein (W [11–5], 4 H, 2 R, 3 K, 1x2, 2B, BB); Celeste Villagrana (W [6–5], 5 H, 0 ER, 4 K, 2 BB); Marissa Hukkanen (3x5, 2 R, RBI); Korina Krueg (3x6, R, SAC); Courtney Hennings (2x6, 2B, RBI); Brittney Perez (1x3, SF, 2 R, RBI); Michaela Decker (1x3, 2B, GWRBI).

THE LAST WORD… "The team has been working hard to better their play. The results are starting to show. I'm very happy with this team effort. It's never easy to sweep a CCAA opponent." — CSUMB Head Coach Andrea Kenney

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters head to Turlock for the annual Tournament of Champions Mar. 29–31. The Otters will open tournament play against No. 7 Concordia–Irvine Mar. 29 at 4:30 p.m.
