Two Tough Losses For Otters At Tournament of Champions

Otters fall to No. 5 Concordia-Irvine 4-3 and to Dominican University 5-3

TURLOCK, Calif. -- A tough day in the field led to a pair of losses for Cal State Monterey Bay on the opening day of the Tournament of Champions Friday at Pedretti Park. CSUMB fell 4-3 to No. 5 Concordia-Irvine in its opening game before suffering a 5-3 upset to Dominican University to close play Friday evening.
CSUMB made three errors in each game, and the errors proved costly. Against Concordia, the errors led to a pair of unearned runs, spoiling a strong pitching performance by junior Hayley Fein (Sparks, Nev./Spanish Springs HS). Against Dominican, the miscues led to three unearned runs, hanging a tough loss on senior Celeste Villagrana (Anaheim/Howard College).
In the opener, CSUMB rallied from a 3-0 deficit to pull within a single run twice. Alyssa Burt (Garden Grove/Pacifica HS) singled in a run in the seventh to make it 4-3. But Lusi Stanley popped up representing the go-ahead run to end the game.
In the nightcap, the Otters spotted Dominican a 3-0 lead before rallying to tie the game on a clutch 2-out, 2-run single by Aubrey Cousins (San Diego/Del Lago Academy) in the fourth. But a costly error to the first Penguin in the bottom of the sixth led to a pair of unearned runs that decided the game.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN… Lusi Stanley popped out on the infield representing the go-ahead run for the final out.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN… Brittney Perez struck out looking representing the go-ahead run for the final out.

ALL GOOD THINGS MUST END, PART I… Hayley Fein saw her personal 8-game winning streak end with Friday's loss to Concordia-Irvine.

ALL GOOD THINGS MUST END, PART II… Courtney Hennings saw her 16-game hitting streak end Friday versus Concordia-Irvine.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… Jess Barrow (2x6, 2B, 2 R); Alyssa Burt (4x7, RBI); Celeste Villagrana (1x3, 2B, R).

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters continue play at the Tournament of Champions with a pair of key West Region games Saturday. The Otters will play Hawaii-Hilo at 4:30 p.m. and Western Washington at 7 p.m.
