Pitching, Power Dominate As Otters Sweep San Marcos

Hayley Fein, Celeste Villagrana toss 3–hitters; Lusi Stanley and Courtney Hennings go yard

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay got two strong pitching performances and a pair of home runs to sweep visiting Cal State San Marcos, 5–2 and 3–1, Saturday at the Otter Sports Complex.

Junior Hayley Fein (Sparks, Nev./Spanish Springs HS) and senior Celeste Villagrana (Anaheim/Howard College) each tossed 3–hitters to earn the complete–game victories. Fein also went 3–for–3 with an RBI at the plate.

Both pitchers benefited from the long ball. In the opener, senior third baseman Lusi Stanley (San Bruno/Howard College) hit a laser over the fence in dead center for her first of the season. Senior second baseman Courtney Hennings (Amador Valley HS) mimicked Stanley's shot to account for all three Otter runs in the nightcap.

Fein made one bad pitch but otherwise was in complete control in the opener. She fanned a career–high 10 and allowed just two runners as far as second base after the first inning.

For her part, Villagrana fanned six batters for the second time this season. She also threw her first complete game since Feb. 9.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Hayley Fein's RBI single capped a 4–run Otter third inning. She no–hit the Cougars over the final 3 1/3 innings to seal the win.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Celeste Villagrana coaxed a soft ground out from San Marcos right fielder Kat Calderon to escape a bases–loaded jam in the fourth. She no–hit the Cougars over the final three innings to secure the win.

A PERFECT 10… Hayley Fein became the seventh different pitcher in Otter history to record 10 strikeouts in a game when she fanned a career–high 10 Saturday against Cal State San Marcos. She is the first Otter to turn that trick since Bianca Noriega struck out 10 Sharks in a win over Hawaii Pacific on Apr. 2, 2016.

WINNING WAYS… Hayley Fein's victory in Game 1 was her seventh consecutive victory. It is the second longest streak of her career and the longest since she won 12 straight from Mar. 4–Apr. 2, 2017.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… Hayley Fein (W [10–5], 3 H, 10 K, 3x3, RBI); Celeste Villagrana (W [5–5], 3 H, 1 R, 6 K); Courtney Hennings (2x7, 3B, HR [2], 2 R, 3 RBI); Lusi Stanley (1x5, HR [1], R, 2 RBI); Alyssa Burt (3x5, 2B); Brittney Perez (1x3, 2B, 3 BB).

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their 4–game versus San Marcos by hosting a doubleheader Sunday at 11 a.m.
