Fein, Hennings Lead To Another Split at No. 20 CSUSB

Hayley Fein tosses a Game 2 shutout as Courtney Hennings delivers the game–winner

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — Brilliant pitching by Hayley Fein (Sparks, Nev./Spanish Springs HS) and a clutch, 2–out hit by Courtney Hennings (Amador Valley HS) led Cal State Monterey Bay to a second consecutive doubleheader split at No. 20 Cal State San Bernardino at the CSUSB Softball Park Saturday.

San Bernardino scored with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to take the opener, 8–7. Fein shutout the Coyotes in the nightcap as Hennings delivered the game–winner in a 2–0 Otter victory.

Game 1 see–sawed with San Bernardino coming from behind twice to open a 7–2 lead after four. The Otters rallied to tie when a 2–run double from Celeste Villagrana (Anaheim/Garden Grove HS) capped a 5–run fifth that knotted the game, 7–7.

It stayed that way until the bottom of the seventh, when San Bernardino cleanup hitter Dominique Walker singled with the bases loaded and two outs to bring home the winning run.

Neither team generated many chances in the nightcap. The Otters finally broke through when three seventh inning walks loaded the bases with two outs for Hennings, who singled to right to break the ice. Pinch runner Shaye Felix (San Jose/Cal Baptist) came around to score on a fielding error one batter later for what proved to be unneeded insurance.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Dominique Walker singled with two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Coyotes the walk–off win.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Hayley Fein retired the final three batters in order to close the seventh.

FEIN TIES CLARKSON IN WINS… Hayley Fein's Game 2 win Saturday was the 55th of her career, tying her with Lindsey Clarkson for No. 2 on the Otter all–time list.

FEIN PASSES CLARKSON IN SHUTOUTS… Hayley Fein's Game 2 shutout Saturday was the 16th of her career, moving past Lindsey Clarkson and into sole possession of second place on the CSUMB career list. Cori Reinhardt owns the Otter record with 24 shutouts.

HENNINGS ONE FROM 100… Including her game–winner in the nightcap, Courtney Hennings drove in three runs Saturday to give her 99 for her career. She needs one to become the ninth player in CSUMB history to drive in 100 or more runs.

BURT'S STREAK ENDS… Alyssa Burt saw her streak of reaching base safely end at 25 games in Saturday's opener. She reached safely in Game 2 and has reached safely in 26 of her last 27 games.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… Hayley Fein (W [9–5], CG, ShO, 7 H, 6 K, 0 BB); Courtney Hennings (3x6, 2B, R, 3 RBI); Savanna Salyer Kovacs (2x4, 2B, RBI); Lusi Stanley (3x7, 2B); Celeste Villagrana (1x2, 2B, 2 RBI).

THE LAST WORD… "The team played hard today. Hayley pitched a great game against a solid CSUSB line up, the defense stepped up and Courtney Hennings showed he maturity at the plate with a huge clutch hit." — CSUMB Head Coach Andrea Kenney

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters return to the friendly confines of the Otter Sports Complex to host a 4–game series with Cal State San Marcos Mar. 22–23.
