Otters Open CCAA Schedule With Sweep At Stanislaus

Hayley Fein and Celeste Villagrana toss 3–hitters in 4–2, 7–0 sweep

TURLOCK, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay softball team got a pair of strong pitching performances to sweep its CCAA–opening doubleheader at Stanislaus State, 4–2 and 7–0 at the Warrior Softball Field Friday afternoon.

Junior Hayley Fein (Sparks, Nev./Spanish Springs HS) allowed just 1–earned run in a 3–hit gem to win the opener. Senior Celeste Villagrana (Garden Grove HS/Howard College) then one–upped Fein by tossing a 3–hit shutout to complete the sweep.

Fein helped her own cause by doubling home the first run in the opener. Senior Courtney Hennings (Amador Valley HS) added a solo home run and a 2–run single to fill out the out scorecard

Again, not to be outdone, Villagrana rapped a 2–run single of her own in the nightcap to give herself all the support she would need. Freshman Jessilyn Barrow (Folsom HS) closed the scoreline with a 2–run single in the sixth.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Courtney Hennings laced a 2–run single to left field to make it 4–1 Otters in the sixth.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Alyssa Burt singled home Courtney Hennings with the game's first run in the first inning. Celeste Villagrana was in such control that Stanislaus managed just three runners in the first six innings and didn't get a runner to second base until there was one out in the bottom of the seventh.

AND THE LITTLE ONES SHALL LEAD THEM… Otter freshmen came through Friday afternoon in Turlock. The rookie quarter of Jessilyn Barrow, Antonia Martinez, Brittney Perez and Kassidy Pilpil combined to go 4–for–7 with two runs and two RBI in the doubleheader.

WELCOME TO THE CLUB… Jessilyn Barrow joined the Otter hit parade Friday by going 3–for–5 for her first three collegiate hits. Her first hit was a pinch hit single in the opener. She added two hits and a double in Game 2.

A THIEF IN THE DAY… Junior shortstop Korina Krueg stole five bases in Friday's doubleheader sweep of Stanislaus State. She stole three bases in the opener, just missing the Otter record of four set by Jessica Wardle at Notre Dame de Namur on Apr. 29, 2007. She is the seventh Otter to steal three bases in one game.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… Celeste Villagrana (W, 1–0, 7.0 IP, ShO, 3 H, 7 K – 1x3, 2 RBI); Hayley Fein (W, 2–1, 7.0 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 3 K – 1x4, 2B, RBI); Korina Krueg (4x7, 3 R, RBI, 5 SB); Courtney Hennings (2x6, HR [1], 2 R, 4 RBI); Jessilyn Barrow (3x5, 2B, 2 RBI); Savanna Salyer Kovacs (3x8, 2B, R).

THE LAST WORD… "I'm so happy with the progress we made this week. The buy in was 100 percent. We executed offensively and defensively and got great pitching performances form Hayley and Celeste." — CSUMB Head Coach Andrea Kenney

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their 4–game set at Stanislaus State with a doubleheader starting Saturday at noon.
