Otters Win Two Saturday To Sweep Series At Stanislaus

Alyssa Burt, Brittney Perez homer as Otters win 4–1 and 7–3

TURLOCK, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay softball team completed a sweep of its CCAA opening series at Stanislaus State by taking both ends of a doubleheader, 4–1 and 7–3, Saturday at the Warrior Softball Field.

Junior Hayley Fein (Sparks, Nev./Spanish Springs HS) and senior Celeste Villagrana (Garden Grove HS/Howard College) once again provided the one–two punch in the circle, allowing just nine total hits. Fein took top honors this time by tossing a 3–hitter to win the opener.

Freshman Brittney Perez (Stockton/St. Mary's HS) provided the juice in Game 1, drilling a 2–run, pinch hit homer to center to highlight a 4–run fourth inning. Fein drove in the first Otter run with a double while sophomore Aubrey Cousins (San Diego/Del Lago Academy) doubled in the frame ahead of Perez's homer

Sophomore Alyssa Burt (Garden Grove/Pacifica HS) continued to swing the hot stick in the Game 2, belting two doubles and her first home run of the season.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… A 2–runner homer by Brittney Perez gave the Otters a 3–1 lead in the fourth. Stanislaus did not get a runner past first base against Hayley Fein over its final four at bats.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… A 2–out, RBI single by Courtney Hennings made it 7–3 Otters in the sixth inning.

AND THEN THERE WAS ONE… By going 3–for–8 Saturday, junior shortstop Korina Krueg is now the last Otter to have hit safely in every game this season. She is hitting .393 (11–for–28) in her first Otter campaign.

THIS TRIO IS STILL SAFE… Korina Krueg is one of a trio of Otters who have reached base safely in all seven games this season. Joining her are senior Luis Stanley and sophomore Alyssa Burt. It's worth noting that sophomore catcher Savanna Salyer Kovacs has reached safely in all six games in which she has played

HOW SWEEP IT IS… The 4–game sweep of Stanislaus State this weekend is CSUMB's first series sweep since it turned the trick at San Francisco State April 14–15, 2017.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… Hayley Fein (1x3, 2B, RBI; W [3–1], 7.0 IP, 3 H, 2K, 3 BB, 1 ER); Alyssa Burt (3x7, HR [1], 2 2B, 2 RBI); Brittney Perez (1x2, HR [1], 2 RBI); Aubrey Cousins (3x6, 2 2B, R).

THE LAST WORD… "This was a great team effort. So nice to see the women genuinely excited to see each other perform well. It's always hard to sweep a quality opponent. It takes a team." — CSUMB Head Coach Andrea Kenney

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters hit the road for an early test of CCAA supremacy while they begin a 4–game series at UC San Diego Friday (Feb. 15). First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m..
