Villagrana Named All–Tournament At Desert Stinger

Senior Celeste Villagrana doesn’t allow an earned run in 14 innings

LAS VEGAS, Nev. — A pair of extra–innings losses put a damper on Cal State Monterey Bay's appearance at the 2019 Desert Stinger Classic, but senior pitcher Celeste Villagrana (Garden Grove HS) brought a little sunshine to the rain–shortened affair by earning all–tournament honors Sunday at Majestic Park.

Villagrana threw 14 innings without allowing an earned run in her two appearance to earn her first piece of hardware this season. She threw seven innings of 3–hit, shutout relief Sunday before Minot State scored without a hit via the international tie–breaker rule to earn a 3–2 win over the Otters in eight innings.

The Otters finished play at the Desert Stinger with a 1–2 record, beating Academy of Art 7–4 before yielding 1–run decisions in extra innings versus both Western Oregon and Minot.

In addition to Villagrana's impressive pitching, sophomore Alyssa Burt (Garden Grove/Pacifica HS) led the offense with a .455 average (5–for–11) with a double and four RBI.

CSUMB returns to action and opens its CCAA schedule this weekend by traveling to Turlock for a 4–game series at Stanislaus State Feb. 8–9. The set kicks off with a doubleheader Friday starting at 4 p.m.
