Otters Beat The Rain, Holy Names To Sweep Doubleheader

Hayley Fein earns win No. 50 in opener; Korina Krueg scores a record four runs in nightcap

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay beat an impending storm and Holy Names University twice to sweep a softball doubleheader from the Hawks, 3–0 and 11–2 Tuesday afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex.

Junior Hayley Fein (Sparks, Nev./Spanish Springs HS) threw a 4–hitter for her first shutout of 2019 to win the opener. The Otter bats then came alive in the nightcap, scoring a season–high 11 runs en route to their first run–rule victory of the season.

CSUMB scored three times in the first inning of both games. In the opener, that had to do as Holy Names starter Chailey Stewart shutout the Otters over the final 6 1/3 innings. With Fein in the circle, however, three runs proved more than sufficient.

RBI singles by Alyssa Burt Garden Grove/Pacifica HS) and starting pitcher Celeste Villagrana (Garden Grove HS/Howard College) opened the floodgates in Game 2. The Otters put the game away with a 5–run fourth inning that featured a 2–run single by Korina Krueg (Tokay HS/Cosumnes River College) and a 2–run double by Burt.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… A heads–up play by Courtney Hennings cut down a potential run at the plate following and infield error for the final out of the sixth inning.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Alyssa Burt's double to the gap in right center put the Otters up 8–0 and in run–rule territory in the fourth inning.

KRUEG RUNS AND RUNS… Korina Krueg tied the CSUMB record by scoring four runs in game in Tuesday's 11–2 Otter win. She is the sixth Otter to turn the trick and the first since Jayme Stark scored four times in a win over Montana State Billings on Feb. 6, 2016.

BURT DELIVERS THE RIBEYES… Alyssa Burt drove home six RBI in Tuesday's 11–2 win over Holy Names, good for No. 2 in the Otter record book. Samantha Luna set the CSUMB record by hitting a pair of grand slams to drive in eight in a win over Holy Names on Mar. 7, 2017.

FEIN HITS 50 WINS… Hayley Fein earned her 50th career win (50–32) in Tuesday's 3–0 win over Holy Names. She joins Cori Reinhardt (86) and Lindsey Clarkson (55) as the only Otter pitchers to record 50 career victories.

FEIN HITS 15 SHUTOUTS… With Tuesday's 3–0 win over Holy Names, Hayley Fein earned her 15th career shutout. She ties Jessica Boyle and Lindsey Clarkson for No. 2 on the Otter career shutouts list. Cori Reinhardt own the CSUMB record with 24.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… Hayley Fein (W [4–5], 7.0 IP, 4 H. 0 R, 4K); Celeste Villagrana (W [4–3]. 4.1 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 2 K; 1x2, RBI); Korina Krueg (3x7, 3B, 5 R, 4 RBI, 2 SB); Alyssa Burt (3x6, 2B, 2 R, 6 RBI, SB); Courtney Hennings (3x5, 2B, 4 R); Marissa Hukkanen (4x7, 2 R).

THE LAST WORD… "I was thankful that we were able not only to get these games in, but to get two wins against a much–improved Holy Names team." — CSUMB Head Coach Andrea Kenney

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters are off this weekend. They return to action by hosting a 4–game series against Cal State East Bay Mar. 8–9 at the Otter Sports Complex. First pitch is scheduled for noon both days.
