Otters Earn Doubleheader Split To Close Series With Toros

Alyssa Burt drives in three, Brittney Perez homers again as Otters win 3–2, fall 5–4

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay came within two outs of a sweep before settling on a doubleheader split with visiting Cal State Dominguez Hills Saturday at the Otter Sports Complex. The Otters held on for a 3–2 win in the opener before Dominguez rallied for three runs in the seventh to take a 5–4 win in the nightcap.

Alyssa Burt (Garden Grove/Pacifica HS) continued to swing a hot bat for the Otters. Her 2–out, RBI single in the second inning of the opener drove home what proved to be the winning run. She added a 2–run double to stake the Otters to an early lead in Game 2.

For the most part, however, the big hits continued to elude CSUMB. The Otters opened Game 1 3–for–6 with runners in scoring position before missing one their next eight attempts while twice failing to get a runner home from third with no outs.

In  the nightcap, they started fine again, cashing in two chances in the first on Burt's double and a 2–run shot from freshman Brittney Perez (Stockton/St. Mary's HS). This time, they managed to get just one runner into scoring position over the final 6 1/3 innings as Toro starter Ashley Weis settled in allowing just two hits over the final six frames.

The Otters still put themselves in prime position to complete the sweep until a pair of errors opened the door to a 3–run Toro seventh.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Celeste Villagrana coaxed Rachel Sandoval to foul out to shallow left field with a runner on second base to end the fifth inning. Villagrana retired the Toros in order over the final two innings.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… The second Otter error of the seventh inning allowed two runs to score to put Dominguez Hills on top 5–4. Toro starter Ashley Wies was in control by then, retiring the final 10 Otters she faced.

BURT STAYS HOT… Sophomore Alyssa Burt ran her hitting streak to a team season–high nine games by finishing Saturday's doubleheader 2–for–6 with a double and three RBI. Burt has reached safely in all 15 games this season.

WELCOME TO THE CLUB… Ellie Bauer looked strong while making her first collegiate start in Saturday's opener. Although she wasn't credited with the win, she allowed just one run and three hits in 3 1/3 innings.

HENNINGS HEATING UP… Courtney Hennings pushed her batting average over .300 for the first time this season by finishing the 4–game series with Dominguez Hills 5–for–13 (.385) at the plate. She went 4–for–8 Saturday with a pair of doubles and a stolen base.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… Celeste Villagrana (W [3–3], 3.2 IP, R, 2 H, 3 K, 0 BB); Courtney Hennings (4x8, 2 2B, 2 R, SB); Brittney Perez (2x5, 2B, HR [3], 2 RBI); Alyssa Burt (2x6, 2B, R, 3 RBI).

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters head to the Bay area for a pair of nonconference doubleheaders next week. They'll kick things off with a twinbill against Holy Names University at Chabot College on Feb. 26.
