Otters Can’t Find Key Hits In Home Opening Losses

Brittney Perez hits her second home run. but Dominguez Hills wins 3–1, 5–1

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay softball couldn't find the key hits when it needed them Friday afternoon. As a consequence, it dropped its home–opening doubleheader to visiting Cal State Dominguez Hills 3–1 and 5–1 at the Otter Sports Complex.

The Otters actually out–hit the Toros 12–11 for the afternoon. They added three doubles and a Brittney Perez (Stockton/St. Mary's HS) home run—compared to just two doubles by the Toros—but managed to push across just a pair of runs.

In the opener, junior Hayley Fein (Sparks, Nev./Spanish Springs HS) rolled into the sixth inning, when a pair of 2–out, bloop singles let the Toros cash in a leadoff single and a walk to score all three of their runs.

Alyssa Burt's (Garden Grove/Pacifica HS) RBI double pulled one run back in the bottom of the inning. The Otters put the potential tying run on with one out in the seventh, but again couldn't find the key hit.

Perez hit her second homer of the season in the second inning of Game 2 to give the Otters an early lead. But a throwing error opened the door on to a 2–run third inning for Dominguez Hills. The Toros put the game away with a pair of 2–out, RBI hits in the seventh.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Reliever Ashley Weis came in to get the final two outs with the potential tying runs on base in the seventh.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Ashley Canizales' RBI double capped a 3–run seventh that gave the Toros a 5–1 lead.

BURT KEEPS ON ROLLING… Alyssa Burt went 1–for–3 in both games Friday and has reached base safely in all 13 games this season. She ran her current hitting streak to seven games.

MISSED OPPORTUNITIES… The Otters couldn't cash in their chances Friday, going 1–for–12 with runners in scoring position in the doubleheader. The lone hit with RISP belonged to Alyssa Burt, who cashed in a 1–out double by Courtney Hennings in the sixth inning of the opener.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… Brittney Perez (1x4, HR [2], RBI); Jess Barrow (3x4, 2B); Courtney Hennings (1x5, 2B, R); Alyssa Burt (2x6, RBI); Korina Krueg (2x8, 2B).

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their 4–game set versus Dominguez Hills with a doubleheader Saturday starting at 11 a.m.
