CSUMB welcomes students from the AVID Program to games on Dec. 5, Feb. 15

SEASIDE, CALIF. — Cal State Monterey Bay Athletics is proud to welcome students from the Monterey Peninsula Unified School District to campus for a pair of basketball doubleheaders this season.

In conjunction with CSUMB's Pre–College Program, the Otters will host up to 180 fourth and fifth grade AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) students per day at NCAA Basketball doubleheaders versus Humboldt State (Dec. 7) and Cal State East Bay (Feb. 15).

The partnership hopes to foster academic motivation in AVID elementary students by encouraging young scholars to excel academically through the connection with CSUMB student–athletes. The goal is to empower students to foster a strong, college–going culture and to encourage students to think about their college and career plans at an early age.

"We believe getting students engaged with the possibility of attending college at an early age will help them see it as an attainable goal," says CSUMB Vice President of Student Affairs Dr. Ronnie Higgs. "We hope to build strong foundational connections that become a college–going culture amongst our local students and this is just one part of that effort."

"We are happy for this collaboration to join another part of the pipeline for success in higher education for all students," adds Dr. Kim Barber, Director of Pre–College Programs at CSUMB.

"MPUSD is excited to partner with CSUMB's Pre–College and athletics programs to offer opportunities for our students to have first–hand, on–campus college experiences," said PK Diffenbaugh, Superintendent, Monterey Peninsula Unified School District. "Attending basketball games this year will allow them to catch the college spirit and inspire them to pursue college after high school."
