Toros Pull Away Late To Take 86–75 Decision From Otters

Damian Wilson leads four Otters in double figures with 20 points

SEASIDE, Calif. — Through most of Saturday's game with Cal State Dominguez Hills Cal State Monterey Bay put itself in position to ring out the 2019 portion of its schedule with a victory. But a late push by the visitors was just enough to give the Toros an 86–75 win in The Kelp Bed.

CSUMB placed four in double figures, with junior Damian Wilson's (Inglewood/Taft HS) game–high 20 points leading the way. Junior Jahvon Johnson (Clovis North HS) added 15 to creep closer to the No. 3 spot on CSUMB's all–time scorering list.

Each team led eight times Saturday, with the Toros holding a 38–37 advantage at the break. Neither team found much purchase until Nick Kornieck knocked down a 3–pointer to erase the final Otter lead of the day at 58–57.

The game stayed tight until Colton Kresl hit a 3–pointer of his own to extend the Dominguez Hills lead to 11, 78–67, with just over two minutes remaining.

In addition to Wilson and Johnson, Maurice Woods (Modesto/Johansen HS) and Andrew Ferguson (Perth, Western Aust./USD) each added 14 points. Ferguson, Wilson and Ben Carter (Adelaide, South Aust./Montana) pulled down seven rebounds to lead CSUMB on the glass.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Wonder Smith made the second of two free throws to extend the Dominguez Hills lead to 80–67 with 1:25 remaining.

WELCOME ABOARD… Andrew Ferguson, a native of Perth, Western Australia, joined the Otter roster for Saturday's game. He came off the bench to score 14 points and add seven rebounds in his CSUMB debut.

START ME UP: Jahvon Johnson made his 86th career start Saturday against Cal State Dominguez Hills. That ties him with Alex Fertig (2013–16) for No. 2 all–time at CSUMB. Brandon Ward owns the Otter record with 98 starts from 2010–13.

JOHNSON'S FAVORITE FOE… The holiday season is a time for feasts, and Jahvon Johnson has feasted on no other opponent like he has on Cal State Dominguez Hills. His 15 points Saturday were right at his 15.8 ppg career average against the Toros. That is his highest against any opponent.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Damian Wilson 20; REBOUNDS: Ben Carter/Andrew Ferguson/Damian Wilson 7; ASSISTS: Andre Ferguson 3; BLOCKS: Ben Carter 1; STEALS: Damian Wilson 3.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will take time off for the holidays before returning to action in the new year with a trip to America's Finest City for doubleheaders at UC Sand Diego (Jan. 2) and Cal State San Marcos (Jan. 4).
