Otters Take High–Scoring Affair From Concordia, 97–92

Maurice Woods leads four Otters in double figures with 20 points

ELLENSBURG, Wash. — Cal State Monterey Bay earned its first win of the season by taking its highest–scoring game in 14 seasons with a 97–92 win over Concordia–Portland Saturday evening at Nicholson Pavilion on the campus of Central Washington.

The 189 total points were the most in a CSUMB game since the Otters and Humboldt State combined for 197 points during the 2006–07 season.

Columbia College transfer Maurice Woods (Modesto/Johansen HS) led the offense for the second consecutive game, finishing with team highs of 20 points and three assists. Senior guard Jahvon Johnson (Clovis North HS) scored 18 to go over 900 points for his career.

Other Otters to score in double figures Saturday included junior Koen Sapwell (Adelaide, S. Australia) with 18 and senior Charlie Tooley (Granite Bay HS) with 11.

CSUMB threatened to pull away midway through the first half before Concordia rallied to trim the Otter lead to 36–35 by intermission. The Otters finally put the game away when Ben Carter (Adelaide, S. Australia/Montana) extended the lead to 16 points at 87–71 with just over two minutes remaining.

Though the game was in hand, Concordia played to the wire, including a buzzer–beating three to make the final cosmetically closer.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Ben Carter took a pretty pass from Jahvon Johnson for a layup and an 87–71 Otter lead with 2:14 remaining in regulation.

LIGHTING UP THE SCOREBOARD… The 97 points scored by the Otters were their most since a 99–76 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills on Feb. 20, 2016. They were the most scored in a regulation (non OT) road game since a 98–90 win at Sonoma State on Jan. 15, 2011.

ANOTHER MILESTONE FOR JAHVON… With 18 points in Saturday's win over Concordia–Portland, Jahvon Johnson became the 11th player in Otter history to score 900 career points (905). He should zip into the CSUMB career Top 10 next week with Ryan Nitz (2014, 16) and Evan Zeller (2014–17) at 909 and 910 points respectively.

BREAKING THE TOURNAMENT CURSE: The Otters got the long sought after tournament win with Saturday's 97–92 victory over Concordia–Portland at the CCAA/GNAC Crossover. That snapped a streak of 12 consecutive tournament defeats dating to the 2014 season.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Maurice Woods 20; REBOUNDS: Jahvon Johnson/Charlie Tooley 5; ASSISTS: Maurice Woods 3; BLOCKS: Ben Carter 2; STEALS: Charlie Tooley 2.

THE LAST WORD… "After a tough opener against Central Friday, I was very happy with the way our guys competed tonight. It wasn't always pretty, but they found a way to grind it out. I'm really looking forward to see where we go from here." – CSUMB Head Coach Isaac Williams

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… CSUMB returns to The Kelp Bed to host the Otter Classic Nov. 15–16. The Otters open tournament play Friday against Alaska and play Academy of Art Saturday. Both games tipoff at 3 p.m.
