Otters Score Early and Often In 7–0 Win At Stanislaus

Otters score three times 2:18 span of first half to roll Warriors

TURLOCK, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay scored early and often to win a laugher Thursday night, scoring seven goals for the second time this season in a 7–0 win at Stanislaus State in Warrior Stadium.

Adrian Rebollar (Watsonville HS) and Walmer Martinez (Soquel HS/Cabrillo College) scored 30 second apart in the 14th minute to stake the Otters to an quick 2–0 lead. Francesco Cianci (Campobosso, Italy) and Luis Lopez (Martinez/De Anza HS) added first half markers of their own, from Rebollar and Martinez respectively.

The scoreline could have been more lopsided but for three balls off the woodwork and a few highlight reel saves from Stanislaus State goalkeepers Justin Motzkus and Daniel Dubiel.

The Otters out–shot the Warriors 16–3. Daniel Lomeli (Alisal HS) need to make just one save for his third shutout of 2019.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… With the Otters leading 2–0,Jake Mendoza slipped a shot just outside Daniel Lomeli's right post in the 21st minute. It proved to be the last shot Stanislaus would attempt in the match.

SEVEN IS A LUCKY NUMBER… The seven goals scored by the Otters matched the output versus UC Santa Cruz on Sept. 20 for their most goals at NCAA level (since 2004). They're the most goals ever scored by the Otters against an NCAA Division II opponent. In case you're curious, the all–time Otter record for goals in a match was 14 in a 14–0 win over Bethany College on Oct. 4, 2003.

BLITZKRIEG BOP, BOP, BOP… With apologies to the Ramones, the Otters blitzed the Stanislaus State defense for three goals in a span of 2:18 of the first half. Goals by Adrian Rebollar (13:05), Walmer Martinez (13:35) and Francesco Cianci (15:23) rank as the seventh fastest 3–goal burst in NCAA Division II history. It's not, however, a CSUMB record. Rebollar (87:05), Rudy Pedroza (88:24) and Luis Lopez (88:45) scored in 1:40 at Cal State Dominguez Hills last season. That mark ranks No. 4 in the NCAA Record Book .

THE CSUMB GOLDEN BOOT, NCAA EDITION… With two goal Thursday at Stanislaus State, Walmer Martinez becomes the most prolific single–season score in CSUMB's NCAA history (2004–present). His 13 goals move him pass Kyle Satow (12 in 2005). Kyle Archibald set the all–time Otter record with 16 goals in 2003, CSUMB's final season at the NAIA level.

MARTINEZ MAKING HIS POINT… With two goals and an assist Thursday at Stanislaus State, Walmer Martinez also overtook Kyle Satow (31 in 2005) for the most points in a single NCAA season with 33. He needs two more to catch Kyle Archibald's all–time MB record of 35 set in 2003.

LOMELI MOVES UP THE LIST… Daniel Lomeli moved up a pair of lists with Thursday's shutout victory at Stanislaus State. The win was the 13th of his career, breaking a tie with Chris Matterzazzi for No. 2 on the Otter career wins list (Evan Drake owns the record with 23 from 2011–15). The shutout was the fifth of his career, breaking a tie with Matterzazzi and Jared Racz (2003–04) for the No. 4 spot (Drake owns that record with 13).

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: Walmer Martinez 2; ASSISTS: Four Otters 1; POINTS: Walmer Martinez 5; SHOTS: Walmer Martinez 3; SAVES: Daniel Lomeli 1.

THE LAST WORD… "As a staff, we are really happy with a very good team performance. It was really good to get (Daniel) Lomeli a clean sheet after his recent performances. The team moved the ball really well and showed a willingness to work for each other." – CSUMB Head Coach Graeme Jaap

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters close the 2019 season with a match at Chico State Saturday (Nov. 9). Kickoff with be at 11:30 a.m. as the opener of men's/women's doubleheader action.
