Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | By Kevin Gilmore (@OtterKevin)

Memorable Season Ends On A Down Note With Loss At Chico

Otters cap best 2–year run in program history with a 9–6–2 record

CHICO, Calif. — One of the most successful men's soccer seasons in Cal State Monterey Bay history ended on a sour note as the 10–man Otters fell 3–0 to Chico State Saturday at the University Soccer Stadium.

Forced to play almost the entire second half down a man after Josh Marquez drew a straight red card four minutes into the second half the Otters couldn't stop the winds from turning rapidly in Chico's favor. The Wildcats scored twice in a 6–minute span to take a commanding 3–0 lead.

CSUMB out–shot Chico 8–5 over the balance of the match, but couldn't find the back of the net.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Jacob Chong scored his second goal in a 6–minute span against a 10–man Otter side to give Chico a 3–0 lead in the 54th minute.

QUITE A RUN… The Otters finish the seasonat 9–6–2 overall. It's CSUMB's second–best record since moving to the NCAA Division II level in 2004. It's also part of the best 2–year run (2018–19) in CSUMB soccer history at the Division II level.

THE CSUMB GOLDEN BOOT, NCAA EDITION… Walmer Martinez finishes his career as the most prolific single–season score in CSUMB's NCAA history (2004–present). His 13 goals trail only Kyle Archibald, who set the all–time Otter record with 16 goals in 2003, CSUMB's final season at the NAIA level.

MARTINEZ MAKING HIS POINT… Walmer Martinez also overtook Kyle Satow (31 in 2005) for the most points in a single NCAA season with 33. Kyle Archibald owns all–time MB record of 35 set in 2003.

LOMELI MOVES UP THE LIST… Daniel Lomeli will return for his senior season in 2020 with a chance to make new marks on several of the CSUMB career goalkeeping list. He will begin the season owner of the lowest goals against average in CSUMB history at 1.12. He needs six more saves to become the seventh player in Otter history with 100. He is No. 2 in career wins (13) and needs 10 more to catch Evan Drake (2011–15) for the Otter career record of 23.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: 0; ASSISTS: 0; POINTS: 0; SHOTS: Matthew Kirk/Luis Lopez 2; SAVES: Daniel Lomeli 5.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… Saturday's match at Chico State concluded the 2019 CSUMB men's soccer season.
