This Time, 10 Men Isn’t Enough As Pomona Rallies

Walmer Martinez give MB an early lead, but Pomona scores twice with man advantage

POMONA, Calif. — Forced to play most of the second half a man down for the second consecutive match, Cal State Monterey Bay couldn't find a way to salvage point this time as Cal Poly Pomona rallied for two goals in the final 30 minutes to win 2–1 Sunday at Kellogg Stadium.

Senior forward Walmer Martinez (Soquel HS/Cabrillo College) scored his 11th goal of the season to stake the Otters to a 1–0 lead in the 17th minute. They looked capable of protecting that lead until things turned on a dime in the 51st minute when Pedro Hernandez received a straight red after getting tangled up after being run over by a Bronco player near midfield.

With the man advantage, Pomona put the pedal down, out–shooting the Otters 17–2 over the final 39 minutes. Goalkeeper Daniel Lomeli (Alisal HS) did his best to keep the Otters in it, making a career–high 11 saves, but even that wasn't quite enough.

Pomona tied the match on a Cyro Oliveira goal exactly 10 minutes after the red card. Eduardo Faria broke the tie five minutes from overtime with his eighth goal of 2019.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Pedro Hernandez received a straight red six minutes into the second half. Even though the Otters had the lead at that time, Pomona dominated play from that moment forward.

LOMELI (ALMOST) SAVES THE DAY… Although the Otters couldn't pull out the match, Daniel Lomeli earned a spot in the CSUMB record book. His 11 saves. That mark ranks No. 2 all–time in the CSUMB record book. Bobby Arteaga set the record with 12 saves in a win at UC Colorado Springs on Sept. 4, 2005.

WALMER CATCHES SERVANDO… Walmer Martinez scored his 11th goal of the season Sunday at Cal Poly Pomona, tying him with Servando Perez (2013) for No. 3 on the Otter single–season goals list. Kyle Satow set CSUMB's NCAA era record with 12 goals in 2005. Kyle Archibald set the all–time Otter mark with 16 goals at the NAIA level in 2003.

MORE MARTINEZ… With his goal Sunday at Cal Poly Pomona, Walmer Martinez ties Nathan Northup (2002–03) on the Otter career points list with 45. That is also the standard for a 2–year Otter career. All three players above him on the list — Kyle Satow (66), Nate Torricelli (61) and Nic Torricelli (58) played four seasons at CSUMB.

REBOLLAR LENDS A FOOT… Adrian Rebollar's assist on Walmer Martinez's goal was the ninth of his career. That ties Rebollar with Max Madrigal (2013–14) for No. 10 on the CSUMB career assist list.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: Walmer Martinez 1; ASSISTS: Adrian Rebollar 1; POINTS: Walmer Martinez 2; SHOTS: Walmer Martinez 3; SAVES: Daniel Lomeli 11.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will close the regular season with a pair of contests in the Central Valley, starting with a Thursday (Nov. 7) affair at Stanislaus State. Kickoff will be at 4:30 p.m. as the opener of men's/women's doubleheader action.
