Otters Earn A Big Road Point, Draw At No. 14 CSUSB

Otters out–shoot Coyotes 12–6 but play to a scoreless draw

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay earned a huge point in its battle to earn a postseason bid by playing No. 14 Cal State San Bernardino to a scoreless draw Friday afternoon at Premier Field.

Despite San Bernardino's lofty ranking — and CSUMB playing down a man for the final 37 minutes due to a red card — the Otters came away with a share of the spoils while lifting their record to 8–4–2 overall and 3–4–2 in CCAA play.

San Bernardino is 9–3–2 and 6–2–2.

CSUMB out–shot the Coyotes 12–6 for the game, bolstered by a 5–1 edge in the first half. Even after going down a man when Jacob Penner (Half Moon Bay HS) drew his second yellow of the match in the 73rd minute, the Otters still out–shot San Bernardino 4–1 playing 10 versus 11.

The Otter defense kept goalkeeper  Daniel Lomeli (Alisal HS) relatively safe, requiring him to make just two saves.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… San Bernardino couldn't convert the final corner kick opportunity of the match into a chance in the 109th minute.

WINNER, WINNER… Friday's draw at No. 14 Cal State San Bernardino guarantees the Otters their first winning season since 2013. To take that one step further, the Otters are ensured of their best 2–season combined record since moving to the NCAA level in 2004.

TESTS AGAINST THE BEST… The Otters have acquitted themselves well against top flight competition this season (No. 4 ranked Cal State L.A. escaped Seaside with a deceptive 2–0 win). You have to travel all the way back to the 2015 season to find the last time a nationally–ranked team has won by more than two goals against the Otters.

KEEP IT CLEAN… Friday's shutout was the second of the season for Daniel Lomeli and the fourth of his career. He is now tied with Sam Campanelli (2007–11) and Jared Racz (2003–04) for No. 4 on the Otter career list.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: 0; ASSISTS: 0; POINTS: 0; SHOTS: Four Otters 2; SAVES: Daniel Lomeli 2.

THE LAST WORD… "I thought the guys' willingness to run and work for each other was exceptional. Even when we went down to 10 men, we were still creating chances and could have won the game in overtime." – CSUMB Head Coach Graeme Jaap

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters continue their 4–match roadtrip with a visit to 2018 West Region champion Cal Poly Pomona Sunday (Nov. 3). Kickoff will be at 11:30 a.m. as the opener of men's/women's doubleheader action.
