One–Goal Loss Puts Otters Behind The CCAA Eight Ball

Dominguez Hills sneaks away with 1–0 win on CSUMB senior day

Story Links

SEASIDE, Calif. — A Holly Kaemerle strike midway through the first half dealt a blow to Cal State Monterey Bay's women's soccer playoff hopes as Cal State Dominguez Hills escaped with a 1–0 win Sunday afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex.

Aside from the goal, Sunday's affair was an evenly balanced match in which the defenses dominated play. Both teams managed just four shots and both put two on frame. Dominguez Hills recorded three first half corners while the Otters attempted the only corner in the second half.

Toro goalkeeper Alyssa Newsom was credited with just two saves but was nevertheless extremely active. Both her stops came on golden CSUMB chances. She roamed far and wide in her box to snuff several through ball opportunities as well.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Jasmine Safarians' shot from 22 yards curved wide in the 80th minute. It proved to be the final shot on goal for either side.

THE HEAT IS ON… Through Sunday's play, the Otters sit on nine points and three points out of CCAA Tournament position with four matches remaining. Dominguez Hills and Cal State L.A. both popped back ahead of the Otters at 10 points with Sunday wins. CSUMB is three points back of Chico and San Marcos, who currently are tied for the sixth and final CCAA Tournament spot at 12 points.

SO LONG, FAREWELL, AUF WIEDERSEHEN, GOODBYE… CSUMB fans had the privilege of bidding farewell to six seniors who player their final home games as Otters Sunday afternoon: Ariana Bañuelos, Sahana Bojorquez, Ale Gonzalez, Meredith Kelly, Alyson Schade and Sophia Zertuche.

ONE WIN AWAY… The Otters (8–5–1 overall) need one win in their final four games to secure their first winning season since joining the NCAA in 2004.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: None; ASSISTS: None; POINTS: None; SHOTS: Melissa Wilson 3; SAVES: Alyson Schade 1.

THE LAST WORD… "It was a tough game where Dominguez Hills finished its chance and we didn't. Overall, we will learn from the experience and be more able to handle such a direct, physical team. It just took us too long to settle the ball and get it on the ground today. But there is a lot of soccer left in the next two weeks." – CSUMB Head Coach Laura VanWart

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters begin their 4–game roadtrip with a pair in Southern California next weekend. CSUMB opens the trip at Cal State San Bernardino Friday (Nov. 1) for a CCAA doubleheader. The women will kickoff at 12:30 p.m. as the opener of men's/women's doubleheader action.
