Late Goal Sinks Otters In A 1–0 Loss At San Bernardino

Otters see three points slip away on 75th–minute goal

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — A game Cal State Monterey Bay almost had to win slipped away late as host Cal State San Bernardino scored against the run of play to defeat the Otters 1–0 Friday evening at Premier Field.

The loss leaves the Otters at 8–6–1 overall and 3–6–0 in CCAA play. They need points Sunday at No. 22 Cal Poly Pomona if they hope to stay in the CCAA Tournament race. San Bernardino (6–9–1, 4–6–0) helped its cause, jumping three points ahead of the Otters in the CCAA standings.

CSUMB was controlling play positionally and possessionally through the first 30 minutes of the second half. But San Bernardino pounced on its best opportunity 15 minutes from time when Kelly Kevershian took control of a loose ball near midfield.

Kevershian found Vidalia Abarca running one–v–one with an Otter defender and slotted her the ball 30 yards from goal. Abarca made a quick cut to free up enough space to get off a bouncing shot from the top of the box that found its way past a diving Alyson Schade for the game's lone score.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… CSUMB couldn't convert its final corner kick opportunity in the 88th minute. It was the last chance for either team.

IF IT WASN'T FOR BAD LUCK… The stellar Otter defense hasn't always been enough this season as CSUMB suffered its fifth 1–0 loss of 2019.

SPEAKING OF THE DEFENSE… The Otters have been quite stingy in 2019. They've allowed more than one goal just once in 16 games, and that was in a 2–0 decision with No. 1 ranked UC San Diego. CSUMB's team goals against average (0.64) and save percentage (.886) are on pace to set school records this season.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: None; ASSISTS: None; POINTS: None; SHOTS: Melissa Wilson 3; SAVES: Alyson Schade 3.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters continue their 4–match roadtrip with a visit to 2018 West Region champion Cal Poly Pomona Sunday (Nov. 3). Kickoff will be at 2 p.m. as the conclusion of men's/women's doubleheader action.
