SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay men's soccer team bolstered its playoff hopes with a convincing 3–1 win over visiting Cal State Dominguez Hills Sunday at the Otter Sports Complex.

The win lifts CSUMB (8–4–1, 3–4–1 CCAA) to 10 points in league play. The Otters trail Chico State by just two points for the sixth and final CCAA Tournament spot. It's worth noting that the Otters and Wildcats will meet in the season finale Nov. 9 in Chico.

As for Sunday's win, CSUMB had to work from behind after a strong run of play by the Toros netted them a lead in the 27th minute. A nice build up down the left wing led to a deflected ball in the box that Daniel Lomeli (Alisal HS) appeared to have an easy bead on before falling back into the goal.

The Otters answered back just before halftime when a quick left wing build up of their own saw Steve Lopez (Harbor HS)/Cabrillo College) and Francesco Cianci (Campobosso, Italy) connect a series of short passes to Luis Lopez (Martinez/De Anza HS) on the doorstep.

Just past the hour, Walmer Martinez (Soquel HS/Cabrillo College) put the Otters on top with a point blank header from a Matthew Lee (Sacramento) cross. Antonio Ordoñez (Vacaville HS) sealed the deal with another header 13 minutes from time.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Antonio Ordoñez gave the Otters a 3–1 lead with his first goal of the season in the 77th minute.

MARTINEZ HANGS 10… Senior forward Walmer Martinez became the fourth player in CSUMB history to score 10 goals in a season with his second–half strike Sunday afternoon. Kyle Archibald set the CSUMB record with 16 goals in 2003.

MARTINEZ LENDS A HAND (FOOT)… Walmer Martinez's helper on the Antonio Ordoñez goal was the 15th of his career, tying him for second place on the CSUMB career assists list. Nic Torricelli set the Otter record with 22 assists from 2002–05.

SO LONG, FAREWELL, AUF WIEDERSEHEN, GOODBYE… CSUMB fans had the privilege of bidding farewell to five seniors who played their final home games as Otters Sunday afternoon: Harry Barba, Luis Lopez, Steve Lopez, Walmer Martinez and Trevor Peterson.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: Luis Lopez/Walmer Martinez/Antonio Ordoñez 1; ASSISTS: Five Otters 1; POINTS: Walmer Martinez 3; SHOTS: Luis Lopez 5; SAVES: Daniel Lomeli 4.

THE LAST WORD… "I'm really happy for the seniors. They have been excellent representatives of the program and really embody the work rate that is expected at CSUMB. As to the match, I don't think we played that well in the first half but I thought the guys were excellent in the second half and thoroughly deserved the convincing win. It was good to see two seniors score and Antonio score his first of the season. " – CSUMB Head Coach Graeme Jaap

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters begin their 4–game roadtrip with a pair in Southern California next weekend. CSUMB opens the trip at Cal State San Bernardino Friday (Nov. 1) for a CCAA doubleheader. The men will kickoff at 3 p.m. as the nightcap of men's/women's doubleheader action.
