Hannah Marin is the third Otter in the last seven CCAA Championships to earn the award

ARCATA, Calif. — Sophomore Hannah Marin (Lancaster/Paraclete HS) became the third Cal State Monterey Bay student–athlete named the CCAA Championship Scholar in the last seven conference championship events to highlight the Otters' day at the 2019 CCAA Cross Country Championship Meet Saturday morning at Baywood Golf and Country Club.

Marin follows on the heels of Ellie Bauer (softball) and Elis Svard (men's golf) as recent Otter winners of the CCAA Championship Scholar Award, which goes to the conference championship participant with the highest grade point average. Marin entered this year's event with a spotless 4.0 GPA.

It's also worth noting that Logan Phillips earned the honor for the Otter men last season.

As to the race itself, sophomore Brooke Roy (Camus [Wash.] HS) led the women once again by finishing 44th overall in 23:39.85. Senior Natalie Vaughn (Corona/Santiago HS) finished right behind in 49th (23:50.33).

Marin (6th), Arlene Diazleal (Alvarez HS/Hartnell College) (70th) and Alex Baron (San Jose/Prospect HS) (75th) closed the CSUMB scoreline.

In the men's race, sophomore Nathan Garcia (El Centro/Southwest HS) led the Otter pack for the first time by placing 42nd overall in 26:32.36. He knocked 1:28 off his personal best time on the course set earlier this season while barely edging freshman Chris Plascencia (Marina HS) by 1.27 seconds for the honor of top Otter.

Garcia was one of three Otters to see significant improvement Saturday on their Baywood course times from earlier this season. Freshman Luis Contreras (Indio HS) dropped more than a minute from his previous time while fellow freshman Ryan Bradley (Sacramento/Sheldon HS) saw a 22 second improvement.

As to the team results, Chico State took the titles in both the men's and women's races. The Otters placed 10th in both fields.

A tip of the cap also goes to Cal State East Bay, which placed second in the women's race and seventh in the men's to take all eight points up for grabs in the Battle of the Bays competition. East Bay now leads 14–4 with the schools set to meet on the Kelp Bed volleyball court Friday night (Nov. 1).

Next up for CSUMB cross country is the NCAA West Regional Championship Meet. The Otters will head to Monmouth, Ore. and the Ash Creek Preserve course for this season's event on Saturday, Nov. 9.
