Otters Can’t Break Through As No. 4 L.A. Hangs On

L.A. scores 30 secons in and then with nine seconds left in a 2–0 win

Story Links

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay played well enough for 89 minutes and 20 seconds to earn at least a share of the spoils, but No. 4 Cal State L.A. scored 30 seconds in then held on for an eventual 2–0 win Friday evening at the Otter Sports Complex.

Junior international David Elizaga scored the only goal Cal State L.A. would need seconds after kickoff with a wicked, curling left–footer from the top of the box.

The teams played to a stalemate for the next 89 minutes until Otter goalkeeper Daniel Lomeli, trying desperately to make a play with time running out, turned the ball over at midfield. Carlos Zarate took the gift and chipped one in from 40 yards as Lomeli scrambled back into position just a tick late with nine seconds remaining in regulation.

The match was otherwise evenly played as the Otters looked every bit the match for one of the nation's top teams. The final shot total favored L.A. just 5–4 while the Otters held a 7–6 advantage in corner kicks.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… With the Otters in desperation mode, Carlos Zarate chipped the clincher into a wide open CSUMB goal from 40 yards out to seal the win for L.A.

ALMOST GIANT KILLERS… The Otters were playing for their first points against a ranked opponent since a scoreless draw with then No. 18 UC San Diego on Oct. 28, 2017. The Otters haven't defeated a nationally–ranked team since upending then No. 7 Sonoma State on Oct. 16, 2009.

KEEPING IT CLOSE… Including Friday's 2–0 set back to Cal State L.A., the Otters haven't lost a home match by more than a 2–goal margin since a 6–0 defeat to then No. 6 Cal State Dominguez Hills on Oct. 16, 2015.

AU REVOIR OTTERS… Sunday's match versus Cal State Dominguez Hills will be the final home match for five Otter seniors: Harry Barba, Luis Lopez, Steve Lopez, Walmer Martinez and Trevor Peterson.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: 0; ASSISTS: 0; POINTS: 0; SHOTS: Matthew Kirk 2; SAVES: Daniel Lomeli 1.

THE LAST WORD… "I'm really proud of the guys' effort and work rate tonight. We showed we can compete with the very best teams in the country and have improved and will keep getting better. We will need to show that same kind of intensity and effort on Sunday." – CSUMB Head Coach Graeme Jaap

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will play their final regular season home match Sunday when they host Cal State Dominguez Hills as part of a CCAA doubleheader. The men will kick off at 11:30 a.m. and the women will kick off at 2 p.m.
