Epic Rally Falls Just Short In Overtime Thriller

Chyna Dews scores 18 points, makes 5 steals in tough 77–69 loss to Chico State

SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball team mounted an epic comeback to force overtime only to see visiting Chico State pull away in bonus time to take a 77–69 win Thursday night in The Kelp Bed.

Freshman guard Chyna Dews (Venice HS) scored a season–high 18 points and collected a season–high five steals to lead CSUMB. Yolanda Ealy (Long Beach Poly/L.A. Valley College) and Camille Parker (Alta Loma HS) led the Otters on the glass with eight boards apiece

The Otters trailed by 18 points, 57–39, with 2:52 remaining in the third quarter and were still down 16 two minutes into the fourth. Consecutive jumpers by Parker provided a spark, but Chico still maintained a 12–point lead, 65–53, with 2:29  when the Otters turned on the afterburners.

A traditional 3–point play by Jordana Price (Seattle/Inglemoor HS) got the comeback rolling. Serena Toney (Seattle/Roosevelt HS) added a jumper and a pair of free throws to pull CSUMB to within 66–64 with eight seconds left in regulation.

A quick foul and a pair of missed free throws by Chico's Vanessa Holland opened the door. The Otters burst through when a driving layup by Parker knotted the game at 66 with 0.8 seconds left.

The Otters kept things close in the extra frame before Chico's Shay Stark scored six points in the final 30 seconds of overtime to seal the Wildcat victory.
