Levy’s First Half Goal Holds Up As Otters Win Home Opener

Freshman Sierra Levy scores her first collegiate goal in 1–0 win over Biola

SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay women's soccer team used a first half marker from freshman Sierra Levy (Tulare Western HS) and seven saves from senior Stephanie Busch (Santa Clara HS) led the Otters to a 1–0, home–opening victory over Biola University Saturday afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex.

Levy finished a short build–up from Sophia Zertuche (Madera South HS/Fresno CC) and Elizabeth Kobrine (Irvine/Northwood HS) that left her clear in the box in the 27th minute. Busch made the goal stand up with seven saves to record her second consecutive clean sheet.

THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN… Elizabeth Kobrine cleared a ball off the line in the 87th minute to thwart Biola's last good scoring chance.

KEEP IT CLEAN… Assistant coach–turned goalkeeper Stephanie Busch recorded her second consecutive shutout. It marks the first time an Otter keeper has won consecutive shutouts since Alysa Noh led CSUMB to consecutive 1–0 wins over Academy of Art and Chico State on Sept. 16–18, 2016.

WELCOME TO THE CLUB… Sierra Levy scored her first collegiate goal in Saturday's win.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: Sierra Levy 1; ASSISTS: Elizabeth Kobrine/Sophia Zertuche 1; SHOTS: Elizabeth Kobrine 3; SAVES: Stephanie Busch 7.

TIGHT D… The Otters have allowed just one goal through their first three matches. It's the first time in school history to Otters have accomplished that feat.

THE LAST WORD… "It was a hard fought battle against a great team today. We created and finished a great goal in the first half, and managed to hold Biola off in the last 20 to get an important win. I was proud of the entire squad today, especially the three newcomers who crafted the game winning goal.  " — CSUMB Head Coach Laura VanWart

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters hit the road to open CCAA play next weekend when the head south to face San Diego County foes UCSD Friday (Sept. 14) and Cal State San Marcos Sunday (Sept. 16). CSUMB returns home to host Chico State Sept. 21.
