Brilliant Effort Nets Only A Scoreless Draw With Hawaii Pacific

Otters out–shoot HPU 16–1 over an 80–minute span but settle for a tie

SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay women's soccer withstood an early Shark attack then saw 80 minutes of dominant soccer net only a scoreless draw with visiting Hawaii Pacific Sunday at the Otter Sports Complex.

HPU controlled possession and out–shot the Otter 6–1 over the first 20–plus minutes. But once CSUMB found its footing, it controlled play through the end of the first overtime. Over a nearly 80 minute span the Otters out–shot HPU 16–1, but couldn't find a way to solve Shark goalkeeper Lauren Spencer, who made several brave challenges in addition to her 10 saves.

For her part, Otter keeper Stephanie Busch (Santa Cruz HS) did such a solid job organizing her backline that she was called into action just four times, twice in the first 16 minutes and twice more in the second overtime.

The woodwork denied both teams great scoring chances. HPU's Tayzha Furuta bent a 20–yard free kick from straight away off the left upright in the third minute while Otter sophomore Melissa Wilson (Campolindo HS) floated a 25–yard effort off the crossbar nine minutes into the second half.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Stephanie Busch saw an attempt from distance by Tayzha Furuta safely over the crossbar in the 107th minute. It proved to be the last attempt for either team.

KEEP IT CLEAN… With her fourth shutout of the season, Stephanie Busch ties Diana Zambrano (2012) for the No. 3 spot in the Otter single–season list for shutouts in a season. Alyssa Noh (2017) and Lily Garza (2013) share the Otter season record of five shutouts.

ALMOST SPOTLESS… By not allowing a goal for the fifth time this season, the Otter defense has allowed either one or no goals eight times in the first nine matches. It is the best defensive start to a season in Otter women's soccer history.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: None; ASSISTS: None; POINTS: None; SHOTS: Melissa Wilson 5; SAVES: Stephanie Busch 4.

THE LAST WORD… "After a tough first 20 minutes, we did a much better job of defending as a group, connecting passes and combining in the final third. After we made those changes, we controlled the game for the rest of regulation and OT. Unfortunately, we were not able to convert, but there were some great opportunities. Credit to the team on getting a result." – CSUMB Head Coach Laura VanWart

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters head to Southern California for a pair of matches next week, beginning with a Thursday twilight tilt at Cal State Dominguez Hills. Kickoff will be at 4:30 p.m. as the opener of men's/women's doubleheader action.
