Offense Breaks Out In 4–0 Shutout Of Banana Slugs

Madison Aguirre, Jasmine Safarians each notch a goal and assist

SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay offense broke out with a season–high four goals Thursday afternoon to hand visiting UC Santa Cruz a 4–0 defeat at the Otter Sports Complex.

Senior Madison Aguirre (Las Vegas, Nev./Palos Verdes HS) and freshman Jasmine Safarians (Pleasant Hill/College Park HS) teamed on a pair of goals in the first four minutes and the Otters rolled from there. Pressure in the box by senior Jaime Oftedal (Edison HS/Fresno CC) forced an Santa Cruz own goal as the hour mark approached before sophomore Melissa Wilson (Campolindo HS) snuck a 25–yard laser under the crossbar in the 65th minute to close the scoring.

Although the Otters controlled the scoreboard and out–shot UCSC 13–6, the Banana Slugs and sophomore midfield Izel Gutierrez played a solid possession game, but struggled to unlock the Otter backline. The one time they did break through, senior goalkeeper Victoria Whyte (Austin, Texas/Lake Travis HS) came up huge to stone Alex Arce and Natalie Fillipi from close range to preserve the shutout.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Jasmine Safarians finished a pretty give–and–go play with Madison Aguirre to put the Otters up 2–0 before four minutes had elapsed.

FOUR OF A KIND… CSUMB's 4–goal outburst was its biggest of the season and the most goals its has scored since putting six behind Holy Names University on Sept. 6, 2017.

KEEP IT CLEAN… Stephanie Busch (2018) and Victoria Whyte (2015) are currently tied for No. 4 on the CSUMB list for most shutouts in a season with three. The duo won't get any individual credit for Thursday's clean sheet, though each played 45 minutes without allowing a goal.

ALMOST SPOTLESS… By tossing its fourth shutout of the season Thursday, the Otter defense has allowed either one or no goals seven times in the first eight matches. It marks the first time in CSUMB history a defense has been so stingy.

COMPLETELY SPOTLESS… The Otters pitched their second consecutive shutout Thursday. The Otter D hasn't allowed a goal in the last 244 minutes and 44 seconds.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: Madison Aguirre/Jasmine Safarians/Melissa Wilson 1; ASSISTS: Madison Aguirre/Sierra Levy/Jasmine Safarians 1; POINTS: Madison Aguirre/Jasmine Safarians 3; SHOTS: Madison Aguirre/Melissa Wilson 2; SAVES: Victoria Whyte 3.

THE LAST WORD… "Thanks to a really strong start from Jasmine and Madi we were able to put the game away early and take care of business at home. But the entire group played a part in the win today and I was happy with the performance." – CSUMB Head Coach Laura VanWart

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will host Pac West Conference foe Hawaii Pacific University Sunday (Sept. 30) at 1 p.m.
