Tafoya Makes A Splash, Scores Match Winner Versus Stanislaus

Freshman Brooke Tafoya scores on her first collegiate shot in her first collegiate game

SEASIDE, Calif. — Finally cleared after early season injury issues, freshman Brooke Tafoya (Lakewood/Mayfair HS) made her presence felt immediately by scoring on her first collegiate shot to lift Cal State Monterey Bay to a 1–0 victory over visiting Stanislaus State Sunday at the Otter Sports Complex.

Tafoya's goal came less than five minutes after kickoff. Melissa Wilson (Campolindo HS) sent a corner to the near post, where Allexxis Hand (Hacienda Heights/Los Altos HS) played a deflection off to Tafoya. Tafoya then beat a diving Alyssa Herman with a bounding shot to the far post.

The Otters rolled up an 11–1 shot advantage in the first half and a 16–8 edge for the match, but the contest played much more evenly than the stats indicated. Stanislaus had the possession advantage for much of the game and had several good scoring opportunities thwarted by a composed Otter backline.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Stephanie Busch (Santa Cruz HS) made all five of her saves in a 6–minute span just past the hour mark to preserve CSUMB's lead. The Warriors did not put a shot on goal over the final 22 minutes.

THAT'S USING YOUR HEAD… Stanislaus had a glorious opportunity to score on a goal mouth scramble in the 52nd minute. Fortunately for the Otters, senior Norma Verduzco (Gonzales HS/Hartnell College) positioned herself perfectly on the goalline to head Summer England's sure goal away from danger.

KEEP IT CLEAN… With her third shutout of the season, Stephanie Busch ties Victoria Whyte (2015) and Andrea Davis (2009) for No. 4 on the CSUMB list for most shutouts in a season. Alyssa Noh (2017)and Lily Garza (2013) share the Otter season record with five.

ALMOST SPOTLESS… By allowing just a single goal, the Otter defense has allowed either one or no goals six times in the first seven matches. It marks the second consecutive season under Head Coach Laura VanWart the Otter defense can make that claim. In case you're wondering, 2017 and 2018 are the first two seasons in which the Otter defense has been so stingy to start the season.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: Brooke Tafoya 1; ASSISTS: Allexxis Hand 1; POINTS: Brooke Tafoya 2; SHOTS: Sahana Bojorquez 4; SAVES: Stephanie Busch 5.

THE LAST WORD… "I'm really proud of the committed performance the team put in today. We started the game with seven freshman and sophomores on the field, and the future looks bright for the program. Hopefully, this is the beginning of us finding our momentum and we can continue the grind through tough games." – CSUMB Head Coach Laura VanWart

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will play a pair of nonconference matches next week, beginning with a Central Coast showdown at UC Santa Cruz Thursday (Sept. 27) at 4 p.m.
