SEASIDE, Calif. — Long overdue good fortune finally smiled on the Cal State Monterey Bay men's soccer team when a furious finish resulted in a 2–1 win over visiting Stanislaus State Sunday afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex.
All three goals came in a wild 12–minute span just pass the hour mark. CSUMB's
Adrian Ortiz (Concord/Northgate HS) opened the scoring in the 62nd minute when he finished a game of ping pong in the box with a bicycle kick from close range. Ten minutes later, Fermin Chaidez took advantage of an Otter turnover at the midfield stripe to feed Joseph Mayorca, who scored from range to equalize.
It took just a half minute for the Otters to respond, however, as
Steve Lopez (Harbor HS/Cabrillo College) beat the Stanislaus back line to a long ball over the top. A Warrior defender knocked him down from behind in the box to draw a PK.
Walmer Martinez (Soquel HS/Cabrillo College) then out–guessed Warrior keeper Edgar Benitez to score the match–winner.
THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Stanislaus' Javier Ceballos header over the crossbar on off a free kick from just outside the right edge of the penalty area in the 86th minute.
CLOSE AND A CIGAR… Sunday's match was the sixth 1–goal decision in seven outings for the Otters this season and the first one in which they earned the victory.
LUCKY NUMBER SEVEN… Sunday's win over Stanislaus was the seventh Otter victory versus the Warriors. That is tied for the fourth–most wins against any single opponent. For the record, the Otters have 10 wins against East Bay and nine each against Humboldt State and San Francisco State.
