Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | By Kevin Gilmore (@OtterKevin)

Otters Score Late Goals In Each Half to Sink Sharks, 2–0

Steve Lopez, Antonio Ordoñez scre their first goals in win over Hawaii Pacific

SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay men's soccer team got goals late in each half to upend visiting Hawaii Pacific University 2–0 Monday afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex.

Steve Lopez (Cabrillo College) played a nifty give–and–go with freshman Antonio Ordoñez (Vacaville HS) to put the Otters on top 1–0 in the 42nd minute. With HPU pressing late, Walmer Martinez (Cabrillo College) flicked a long punt by goalkeeper Trevor Peterson (Bakersfield/Liberty HS) to Ordoñez, who slipped the ball under a charging Chandler Schur for an insurance marker three minutes from time.

For its part, HPU played a strong game and had two glorious opportunities to claim the lead denied by brilliant defensive efforts. Adrian Ortiz (Northgate HS/San Jose State) picked a ball off the line in the 32nd minute to deny Reece Montgomery one chance. Seven minutes later, Juan Alejandre (Richmond/DeAnza HS) headed Jaden Slusiewicz's point–blank opportunity away from danger to keep the match scoreless.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Antonio Ordoñez scored in lightning fashion off a long punt to put the Otters up 2–0 in the 87th minute.

WELCOME TO THE CLUB… Both Steve Lopez and Antonio Ordoñez scored their first Otter goals in Monday's win over Hawaii Pacific.

HEAVY D… The Otter defense has been solid so far in 2018, allow either zero or one goal in regulation in six of its first eight games. CSUMB has yet to allow more than two goals in a game this season.

TANDEM SHUTOUT… CSUMB's first regular season shutout of 2018 (the Otters posted three shutouts in the preseason) was a team effort. Although he wasn't credited with a save, junior Daniel Lomeli (Alisal HS) played the first 45 minutes and earned the win. Sophomore Trevor Peterson played the final 45 minutes and made four saves to preserve the clean sheet.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: Steve Lopez/Antonio Ordoñez 1; ASSISTS: Walmer Martinez/Antonio Ordoñez/Trevor Peterson 1; POINTS: Antonio Ordoñez 3; SHOTS: Harry Barba 2; SAVES: Trevor Peterson 4.

THE LAST WORD… "Two new names on the scoresheet is very pleasing. We defended for a lot in the second half against a good side, so I'm very pleased to get the clean sheet also." – CSUMB Head Coach Shane Carew

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters head to Southern California for a pair of matches next week, beginning with a Thursday night meeting at Cal State Dominguez Hills. Kickoff will be at 7:30 p.m. as the nightcap of men's/women's doubleheader action.
