Otter Offense Busts Loose In 5–0 Rout Of Dominguez Hills

Adrian Rebollar, Luis Lopez score two each in second consecutive shutout

CARSON, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay offense kicked into high gear Thursday night in a record–setting 5–0 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills at Toro Stadium.

The five goals are the most scored by the Otters in a road match against an NCAA opponent and the most scored in any road match since a 6–0 win at Cal–Maritime on Oct. 7, 2003. The five goals also match the CSUMB record for goals since moving to the NCAA level, last set in a 5–3 win over Humboldt State on Sept. 13, 2013.

CSUMB controlled play in the first half but couldn't find a way to break through until 10 minutes after the restart when sophomore Adrian Rebollar (Watsonville HS) curled a perfect 23–yard free kick over the wall and under the crossbar for his first of the season. Twelve minutes later, Walmer Martinez (Soquel HS/Cabrillo College) stripped a Toro defender in the box and fed Luis Lopez (Martinez/De Anza HS) for his third goal of the season.

Dominguez Hills had one chance to get back in the game late, but the Otter backline held for an offside that negated a scoring opportunity in the 87th minute. The Otters followed with a 3–goal barrage over the next two minutes to put the game on ice.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Adrian Rebollar scored his second goal of the match to make it 3–0 in the 88th minute. The Otters would add two more goals over the next 1:40 to turn the affair into a laugher.

A RAPID TRIPLE CROWN… Goals by Adrian Rebollar (87:05), Rudy Pedroza (88:24) and Luis Lopez (88:45) came in just 1:40. It's the second–fastest 3–goal output by a team in NCAA Division II history. The fastest, you ask? Cal State Bakersfield scored three goals in 1:16 at Cal State Dominguez Hills on Oct. 30, 2002.

IT MUST BE THE COACHING… If you think the fastest three goals by a team both coming against Cal State Dominguez Hills was a strange coincidence, you ain't seen nothing yet. The 2002 Cal State Bakersfield team was coached by Simon Tobin. Tobin was CSUMB Head Coach Shane Carew's boss at San Jose State. The first and third Bakersfield goals were scored by Kyle Gookins. Gookins was (wait for it) CSUMB Assistant Coach Graeme Jaap's head coach at Jaap's last stop, Stetson University.

HEAVY D… The Otter defense has been solid so far in 2018, allow either zero or one goal in regulation in seven of its first nine games. CSUMB has yet to allow more than two goals in a game this season.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: Luis Lopez/Adrian Rebollar 2; ASSISTS: Antonio Ordonez 2; POINTS: Luis Lopez/Adrian Rebollar 4; SHOTS: Luis Lopez 5; SAVES: Daniel Lomeli 3.

THE LAST WORD… "Very professional performance tonight. Really proud of the clean sheet." – CSUMB Head Coach Shane Carew

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their brief Southern California roadtrip with a match at No. 13 Cal State L.A. Saturday (Oct. 6). Kickoff will be at 2 p.m. as the second match of men's/women's doubleheader action.
