Early Goal Paves The Way For No. 13 L.A. In 2–0 Decision

Otters try to rally late but Golden Eagles hold on

LOS ANGELES — No. 13 Cal State L.A. scored in the fifth minute and the Golden Eagle defense shut the door on visiting Cal State Monterey Bay en route to a 2–0 victory Saturday at University Stadium.

The Golden Eagles used a pair of nifty passing plays to set up tap–in goals in the fifth and 62nd minutes. The Otters battled right to the final whistle, even earning a pair of corner kicks in the final five minutes, but couldn't find a way past L.A. goalkeeper Alexander Brems.

Walmer Martinez (Soquel HS/Cabrillo College) and Adrian Rebollar (Watsonville HS) led the Otter offense with three and two shots respectively. Daniel Lomeli (Alisal HS) made three saves in goal.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Tim Klefisch scored his third goal of the season in the 62nd minute. CSUMB managed four shots over the final half hour, but put only one of those on frame.

AN INTERNATIONAL FLAIR… Although Cal State L.A. is the third nationally–ranked team the Otters have faced this season, the Golden Eagles roster is like no other. Fourteen Golden Eagles are imported from other countries, including both goal scorers: Lindahl (Norway) and Klefisch (Germany); and goalkeeper Brems (Denmark).

THE DEFENSE DOESN'T REST… Despite Saturday's setback, the Otter defense still continues to play at a high level. CSUMB hasn't conceded more than two goals in a match this season. At that, the Otter defense has allowed two goals in regulation just three times.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: None; ASSISTS: None; POINTS: None; SHOTS: Walmer Martinez 3; SAVES: Daniel Lomeli 3.

THE LAST WORD… "I'm disappointed to lose, but we can take away a lot of learning opportunities for this young group of players." – CSUMB Head Coach Shane Carew

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters return home to begin a 4–match homestand, beginning Wednesday (Oct. 10) when Cal State East Bay visits. Kickoff will be at 12:30 p.m. as the opener of men's/women's doubleheader action.
