Otters Fire The First Salvo In The Battle of the Bays With 5–0 Win

Steve Lopez scores twice as Otters out–shoot Pioneer 23–0 in decisive victory

SEASIDE, Calif. — The first skirmish in the Battle of the Bays proved to be a decisive Cal State Monterey Bay victory at the Otter men's soccer team rolled to a 5–0 win over Cal State East Bay Wednesday at the Otter Sports Complex.

With the win, the Otters take 4–0 lead in the season–long Battle of the Bays competition between bays Monterey and East. By the time it's over, the Battle of the Bays will feature 24 competitions across 13 sports.

CSUMB dominated this one from the opening whistle, needing just 2:45 to strike what proved to be the match–winner. Junior Walmer Martinez (Soquel HS/Cabrillo College) did the honors and assisted on two other goals.

Martinez was far from the only Otter hero Wednesday. Junior Steve Lopez (Harbor HS/Cabrillo College) scored a pair of goals 20 minutes either side of halftime. Sophomore Adrian Rebollar (Watsonville HS) and freshman Matthew Lee (Sacramento/Connections Academy) each added second–half markers.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Given that East Bay did not deliver a shot on goal in the match, this one ended when Walmer Martinez finished a nice run–up by George Gonzalez and Julio Varela to put the Otters up 1–0 in the third minute.

THREE IS THE MAGIC NUMBER… All four goal scorers—Matthew Lee, Steve Lopez, Walmer Martinez and Adrian Rebollar—recorded his third goal of 2018 in Wednesday's match.

HOME–GROWN TALENT… Six of the eight Otters who registered points Wednesday hail from the Monterey Bay area: George Gonzalez (North County HS), Steve Lopez (Harbor HS/Cabrillo College), Walmer Martinez (Soquel HS)/Cabrillo College), Adrian Rebollar (Watsonville HS) and Julio Varela (Watsonville HS/Hartnell). For good measure, starting goalkeeper Daniel Lomeli (Alisal HS) also is a local product.

THE DEFENSE DOESN'T REST… Not only did the Otters post their third shutout of the season in Wednesday's 5–0 victory over Cal State East Bay, CSUMB now hasn't conceded more than two goals in a match for 13 consecutive matches dating back to last season. At that, the Otter defense has allowed two goals in regulation just three times over that span.

THEY'VE GOT A SHOT… The Otters out–shot East Bay 23–0 Wednesday afternoon.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: Steve Lopez 2; ASSISTS: Walmer Martinez 2; POINTS: Steve Lopez/Walmer Martinez 4; SHOTS: Walmer Martinez 6; SAVES: None.

THE LAST WORD… "Very professional performance. We created a lot of chances, which was pleasing. Any clean sheet at this level is just as pleasing." – CSUMB Head Coach Shane Carew

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will continue their 4–match homestand by hosting San Francisco State Friday (Oct. 12). Kickoff will be at 12:30 p.m. as the opening match of men's/women's doubleheader action.
