Lopez Volley Earns Three Points For Otters In 1–0 Victory

Luis Lopez marker lifts Otters over S.F. State, into CCAA tournament hunt

SEASIDE, Calif. — Luis Lopez (De Anza HS) scored his team–leading fifth goal early in the second half to lead Cal State Monterey Bay in a hard–fought 1–0 victory over San Francisco State Friday afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex.

Lopez volleyed home a rebound 10 minutes into the second half, taking advantage of one of the few scoring opportunities for either side. Junior goalkeeper Daniel Lomeli (Alisal HS) made it stand up, earning his second shutout of 2018 by stopping all three Gators shots on target.

The spoils were important for both teams in a tight CCAA Tournament race. By earning all three points, CSUMB (6–6–0, 4–4–0 CCAA, 12 pts.) moves within three points of second place Pomona and San Bernardino and two points of fourth–place SFSU (7–3–3, 4–3–2, 14 pts.). The top six teams in the CCAA standings will advance to the CCAA Tournament.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Tariq Pulskamp's last gasp effort sailed over the crossbar as time expired.

OTTERS ON A ROLL… Friday's win over San Francisco State makes it five wins in six matches for the Otter men. It matches their best streak (Oct. 4–25, 2013) since moving to the NCAA level. The Otters won 8–of–9 matches from Oct. 2 – Nov. 2, 2002 as an NAIA member.

HIGH 5… Luis Lopez scored his fifth goal of 2018 Friday, moving him into a tie for 13th place on the Otter single–season scoring list.

LENDING A HAND (OR FOOT, AS IT WERE)… Junior Walmer Martinez recorded his seventh assist of 2018 in Friday's win over San Francisco State. That ties him with Andrew Brault (2007), Kyle Satow (2005) and Nic Torricelli (2005) for No. 3 on the CSUMB single–season assists list. Nathan Northup set the Otter record with nine assists in 2002.

THE DEFENSE DOESN'T REST… Friday's clean sheet was the second in a row and the fourth in five matches for the Otter defense. It is CSUMB's best such run as an NCAA member and its best such streak since posting six shutouts in seven matches during the 2002 season. CSUMB hasn't conceded more than two goals in a match this season. At that, the Otter defense has allowed two goals in regulation just three times.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: Luis Lopez 1; ASSISTS: Walmer Martinez 1; POINTS: Luis Lopez 2; SHOTS: Walmer Martinez 3; SAVES: Daniel Lomeli 3.

THE LAST WORD… "We showed real grit in our performance and Luis (Lopez) scored an amazing volley that deserved to win any game." – CSUMB Head Coach Shane Carew

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters continue their 4–match homestand next Friday (Oct. 19) when Cal Poly Pomona visits the Otter Sports Complex. Kickoff will be at 12:30 p.m. as the opening match of men's/women's doubleheader action.
