Overtime Does In Young Otters Again As Pomona Prevails, 1–0

Daniel Lomeli stands on his head with 10 saves but Otters fall in extra time

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay's winning streak snapped at three games as overtime once again proved to be the Achilles' heel of the young Otter roster in a 1–0 setback to in–form Cal Poly Pomona Friday at the Otter Sports Complex.

CSUMB (6–7, 4–5 CCAA) lost in overtime for the fourth time this season when Patricio Yrizar chipped home a rebound in the 99th minute. The win sent Pomona to 10–4 and 8–1. The Otters remain very much in the CCAA Tournament race with three matches to play while Pomona stays in hunt for the regular season title.

The teams played through a reasonably even first half before Pomona turned up the pressure at the interval. The Broncos out–shot the Otters 13–2 over the final 54 minutes, but a career–high 10 saves from junior Daniel Lomeli (Alisal HS) kept the Otters afloat until the final minute of overtime.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Patricio Yrizar knocked home the rebound of a Gabriel Castillo shot with 70 seconds remaining in overtime.

YOUTH IS NOT YET SERVED… With a roster featuring 20 underclassman—including 12 freshmen—the Otters were once again almost passed the test of not only an experienced roster, but one with ample international experience as well. Pomona's roster featured 17 upperclassman and eight with international experience.

AN ALMOST PERFECT 10… Daniel Lomeli's 10 saves not only were a career high, they rank No. 2 on the Otter list for saves in a match. Bobby Ortega set the Otter mark with 12 saves in a win over Colorado–Colorado Springs on Sept. 4, 2005.

THE DEFENSE DOESN'T REST… Despite the loss, Friday's match provided yet another stellar result for the Otter defense. CSUMB hasn't conceded more than two goals in a match this season. At that, the Otter defense has allowed two goals in regulation just three times.

BETTER THAN AVERAGE… Staying with the defensive theme, the Otters finished Friday's match with an aggregate 1.04 goals against average. The CSUMB record for GAA is 1.08 by the 2002 Otters. At the NCAA level, CSUMB's best GAA has been 1.26 by the 2011 squad.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: None; ASSISTS: None; POINTS: None; SHOTS: Adrian Rebollar 2; SAVES: Daniel Lomeli 10.

THE LAST WORD… "We probably played one of the best teams in the country today and stood firm for long periods. Hard to lose in overtime. We have many new players that will learn from this and know we can compete with  some of the best." — CSUMB Head Coach Shane Carew

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters close the home portion of their 2018 schedule by hosting Cal State San Bernardino Sunday morning. Kickoff will be at 11:30 a.m. as the opener of men's/women's doubleheader action.
