Otter Stay Alive With Huge 3–1 Win Over San Bernardino

Josh Marquez scores first goal, Walmer Martinez ties MB record with his 9th assist of 2018

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay kept its postseason hopes alive with a big 3–2 victory over visiting Cal State San Bernardino Sunday at the Otter Sports Complex. CSUMB improved to 7–7 overall and 5–5 in the CCAA. San Bernardino slipped to 10–5 and 7–3.

The top three spots in the 6–team CCAA Tournament field are secured with Cal Poly Pomona, San Francisco State and Cal State L.A. locked. CSUMB will be battling with Chico State, San Bernardino and UC San Diego for the final three spots.
All four teams play twice next weekend.

The Otters needed less than three minutes to take the lead Sunday when Luis Lopez (De Anza HS) finished a passing play in the middle of the box for his sixth goal. Sophomore defender Josh Marquez (San Jose/Bellarmine Prep) doubled the lead 16 minutes later by nodding home a Walmer Martinez (Soquel HS/Cabrillo College) corner for his first collegiate goal.

San Bernardino pulled one back on a 67th minute spot kick by Danny Ortiz, but Martinez sealed the win for the Otters when San Bernardino goalkeeper Jacob Huber strayed from his line and Martinez waltzed around him to score the insurance marker in the 87th minute.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Walmer Martinez scored his fourth of the season to make it 3–1 in the 87th minute.
