Late Goal Ends Otter Playoff Push In 2–1 Loss At Humboldt

Juan Alejandre scores in season’s penultimate match

ARCATA, Calif. — Ten–man Cal State Monterey Bay saw its final push for a CCAA Tournament bid end as host Humboldt State created a late goal out of whole cloth to take a 2–1 decision Thursday at College Creek Field.

CSUMB (7–8–0, 5–6–0 CCAA) put a season–high 13 shots on frame Friday afternoon but managed to slip only one past Humboldt goalkeeper Chris Cherms. Juan Alejandre (De Anza HS) did the honor for the Otters, finding the back of the net from outside the box just past the half–hour mark.

Despite strong possession dominance by the Otters, they found themselves down a man when Matthew Lee drew a straight red card in the 78th minute. Nine minutes later, a long ball over the top caught CSUMB goalkeeper Trevor Peterson (Bakersfield/Liberty HS) too far off his line in a bid beat Humboldt striker Isaiah Dairo to the ball.

Dairo flicked a header from just outside the penalty area over Peterson and no Otter defender could race back to prevent the ball from bouncing slowly in.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Isaiah Dairo flicked home a header in the 87th minute to break a 1–1 tie.

SEEING RED… Matthew Lee picked up the third red card of the season for the Otters. It marked the second time in 2018 that the Otters led or were tied, went down a man, then lost a 1–goal decision.

SOMETHING TO PLAY FOR… Although their playoff hopes have ended, the Otters will be playing to finish at or above .500 for just the fourth time since moving to the NCAA level for the 2004 season.

THEY HAD A SHOT… The Otters put 13 shots on frame Thursday at Humboldt State. That equals the most in a match this season since they also put  13 on target in a 5–0 win over East Bay on Oct. 10. Their 18 total shots marked the third most in a match in 2018.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: Juan Alejandre 1; ASSISTS: Julio Varela 1; POINTS: Juan Alejandre 2; SHOTS: Pedro Hernandez 4; SAVES: Trevor Peterson 4.

THE LAST WORD… "We played a bit naive in the first half and Humboldt were really up for the fight. I thought second half we created a lot of opportunities as we have all year and one mistake late in the game cost us. We have a freshman sent off for a second game this year that shows our immaturity." – CSUMB Head Coach Shane Carew

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will close their 2018 schedule with a match at Sonoma State Saturday (Oct. 27) at 2 p.m.
