Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | By Kevin Gilmore (@OtterKevin)

Otters End Season With 1–0 Setback At Sonoma

Despite loss, CSUMB posts 4–win improvement over 2017 campaign

SEASIDE, Calif. — The 2018 season came to a tough end for the Cal State Monterey Bay men's soccer team when it dropped a 1–0 decision in its season finale at Sonoma State Saturday on the Seawolf Soccer Field.

Despite allowing just one shot on frame in the first 60 minutes, the Otter defense cracked in Sonoma's lone flurry just past the hour when Sebastian Santos finished from the doorstep for the game's lone goal.

For it's part, the Otter offense put eight shots on target and generated four corner kicks to just one for Sonoma, but it failed to find the back of the net for just the fourth time this season.

CSUMB finishes its 2018 campaign 7–9–0 overall and 5–7–0 in CCAA play. The Otters will finish in seventh place, just one spot removed from what would have been their first playoff berth since 2007.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… the Sonoma defense blocked a shot attempt by Justin LaPerle with five seconds remaining in regulation.

HEADING IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION… Despite Saturday's loss, the Otters finished with their third most wins since 2008 and their fourth most since joining the NCAA in 2004. They also more than doubled 2017's win total (3–11–2).

LOOKING AHEAD… A wise man once said the best thing about freshmen is that they become sophomores. Given that as a starting point, the best is ahead for an Otter roster that featured nine freshman in 2018. In fact, 20 of the 28 players on the 2018 Otter roster were either freshmen or sophomores. Holy Names/Hartnell College transfer Julio Varela was the only senior on this season's team.

MARTINEZ IS TWO FOR THE BOOKS… Junior forward Walmer Martinez (Soquel HS/Cabrillo College) had a season for the (record) books in 2018. He set the CSUMB season standard with nine assists while his 17 points rank No. 10 on the Otter single–season list.

LOMELI FINISHED No. 3… Junior goalkeeper Daniel Lomeli (Alisal HS) finished his first season as CSUMB's starting goalkeeper with a 1.09 goals against average. That mark ranks No. 3 all–time on the Otter single–season list.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: None; ASSISTS: None; POINTS: None; SHOTS: Walmer Martinez 4; SAVES: Daniel Lomeli 4.

THE LAST WORD… "I thought we dominated the second half and we were missing good final third decisions and ideas. Soft goal to concede that's not acceptable at this level." – CSUMB Head Coach Shane Carew

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… Saturday's match put a lid on the 2018 Otter men's soccer schedule. They finish 7–9–0 overall and 5–7–0 in CCAA play (good for 7th place).
