One Strike The Difference As Chico Takes Down Otters, 1–0

Defense stands out again but goal drought continues

SEASIDE, Calif. — A cracker of a goal by Chico State senior Korie Bozart proved to be the difference as the Wildcats rode that score to a 1–0 win over host Cal State Monterey Bay Friday at the Otter Sports Complex.

Bozart created a turnover in the Otter defensive third then banged one into the upper right corner in the 28th minute to break the ice. It was the only blemish in an otherwise brilliant performance by senior goalkeeper Stephanie Busch (Santa Cruz HS), who made several highlight reel worthy saves amongst her nine stops.

Sophomore Melissa Wilson (Campolindo HS) led the Otters with four shots. Senior Madison Aguirre (Simi Valley HS) took three.

Chico held a slim 14–11 edge in shots for the match and a 7–3 advantage in corner kicks.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Chico goalkeeper Brenna Miller saved Madison Aguirre's attempt from the top of the box in the 84th minute. It proved to be the final shot of the match for either team.

HANG TEN… The Otters posted 10 saves Friday afternoon (nine by Stephanie Busch). That ties for fourth most in a match in school history.

TO THE NINES… The nine saves by Stephanie Busch tie Alyssa Noh (vs. Sonoma State in 2017) for No. 5 in the Otter individual match list. The nine saves were one off Busch's career best of 10, set twice previously.

ALMOST SPOTLESS… By allowing just a single goal, the Otter defense has allowed either one or no goals five times in the first six matches. It marks the second consecutive season under Head Coach Laura VanWart the Otter defense can make that claim. In case you're wondering, 2017 and 2018 are the first two season in which the Otter defense has been so stingy to start the season.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: None; ASSISTS: None; POINTS: None; SHOTS: Elizabeth Wilson 4; SAVES: Stephanie Busch 9.

THE LAST WORD… "We we're unlucky to not come away with a result today. We just couldn't seem to find the back of the net despite some really dangerous attacking sequences. We are looking to create some luck for ourselves on Sunday." – CSUMB Head Coach Laura VanWart

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their weekend homestand by hosting Stanislaus State Sunday morning. Kickoff will be at 11:30 a.m. as the opener of men's/women's doubleheader action.
