All For Naughts As Otters Drop Bizzare Overtime Decision

Chico scores with 0:00 remaining in regulation en route to 2–1 win

SEASIDE, Calif. — A complex web of bad luck continued to surround the Cal State Monterey Bay men's soccer team Friday as it dropped the most unlikely of results to visiting Chico State, 2–1, in double overtime at the Otter Sports Complex.

Chico scored to tie the match with 0:00 showing on the clock in regulation. In the first overtime, the Otters were awarded a penalty that was subsequently rescinded without explanation after a lengthy discussion.

Sam Licona eventually ended the match with his first goal of the season in the 106th minute.

CSUMB got on the board first when Julio Varela (Watsonville HS/Hartnell College) finished a nice give–and–go with freshman Antonio Ordoñez (Vacaville HS) in the 72nd minute. Chico tied when Garrett Hogbin half–volleyed a wicked shot in from just outside the box as time expired.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Sam Licona scored with 4:42 remaining in the second overtime.

ALL FOR NAUGHTS, PART I… Although the scoreboard showed 0:00, the horn had not yet sounded when the goal scored. That meant the goal went in with between 0.9 and 0.1 seconds remaining in regulation.

ALL FOR NAUGHTS, PART II… Although the Otters never scored a goal with all naughts on the clock, back in 2012, the Otters defeated Cal State San Bernardino 1–0 when Juan Montellano scored at 109:59—with one second remaining in double overtime.

FOR WANT OF A GOAL… All five of CSUMB's losses this season have come by one goal (including three in overtime). CSUMB's record for 1–goal losses over an entire season is seven (2008). Despite being 1–5, CSUMB's goal differential for the season is only minus-3.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: Julio Varela 1; ASSISTS: Antonio Ordoñez 1; POINTS: Julio Varela 2; SHOTS: Adrian Rebollar 3; SAVES: Daniel Lomeli 7.

THE LAST WORD… "We battled hard against a very good Chico team and it's a heartbreak to concede on the last second of the game. We have to do a better job seeing out games." – CSUMB Head Coach Shane Carew

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters continue their 3–game homestand by hosting Stanislaus State Sunday afternoon. Kickoff will be at 2 p.m. as the nightcap of men's/women's doubleheader action.
