Dominating Effort Lead Otters To a 1–0 Win Over Minnesota–Crookston

Madison Aguirre’s first goal of the season in the 43rd minute decided the match

NAMPA, Idaho — The Cal State Monterey Bay women's soccer team gave dominating performances on both ends of the field to earn its first victory of 2018 by taking a 1–0 decision from Minnesota–Crookston Saturday at the NNU Soccer Field. The Otters improved to 1–1 with the win.

Senior Madison Aguirre (Las Vegas/Nev./Palo Verde HS) converted CSUMB's 10th shot of the first half into the match's lone goal in the 43rd minute. Fellow senior Taylor Duplantier (Lakewood HS) headed an Elizabeth Kobrine (Irvine/Northwood HS) corner to Aguirre to earn the assist.

On offense, CSUMB peppered the Crookston goal with 19 shots, forcing Golden Eagle goalkeeper Olivia Puttin into action 14 times. The Otter backline afforded senior goalkeeper Stephanie Busch (Santa Cruz HS) the luxury of a clean sheet in which her only drama was seeing Crookston's lone shot go wide in the 83rd minute.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Jessica Scott's shot sailed wide in the 83rd minute. It was the first—and last—shot by the Golden Eagles in the match.

TAKING THEIR SHOTS… While 19 shots is indeed a hefty total, the CSUMB offense has displayed a propensity for creating chance under second–year head Coach Laura VanWart. The Otters posted double–digit shots eight times in 2017, including a season–high 27 in a win over Holy Names University.

SPREADING THE WEALTH… Eight different Otters contributed to Saturday's 19–shot onslaught. Freshman Elizabeth Kobrine led the way with five shots, all on frame.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: Madison Aguirre 1; ASSISTS: Taylor Duplantier 1; POINTS: Madison Aguirre 2; SHOTS: Elizabeth Kobrine 5; SAVES: None.

THE LAST WORD… "It was a dominant performance on the road today. Our backline was organized and tough and we were able to control the tempo and rhythm of the game through our possession and ball circulation. Credit to seniors Madison Aguirre and Taylor Duplantier for coming up with the game–winning goal. They were amazing leaders this weekend." – CSUMB Head Coach Laura VanWart

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters return to Seaside to host Biola University in their 2018 home opener Saturday, Sept. 8. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
